Southern Underground Pro: Streets of Hate Recap

Southern Underground Pro was back in full effect with another #SUPsunday and the SoBros had a blast. After some pre-show drinks and burgers at The Crying Wolf we made the short trek to The Basement East for some strong style insanity at Streets of Hate.

Joey Lynch vs. Tyler Matrix

This is how you start off a show, fam. Both of these guys brought their A games and it translated to a top notch back and forth matchup. This was Joey’s first appearance at SUP, but you wouldn’t have guessed that from the crowd reaction. Lynch gets the win and spurns a “moonsault Jesus” chant.

AJ Gray vs. Curt Stallion

Man, I was SO excited for this matchup, so it was a bummer to find out that Curt wasn’t cleared, leading to him needing a replacement.  Maserati (that may or may not be his name) steps in for Curt, but I feel like he may have regretted that decision quickly as AJ took it to him. As locked in as AJ was I’m not sure if anyone would have beat him yesterday. Gray gets the dub and in a serious post match scrum with Curt that had the SUP locker room, commentators, refs… pretty much everyone having to separate the two. After the scrum AJ challenged Curt to an I Quit match in August which Curt gladly accepted. Good googly moogly folks.

Mr. Brickster vs. Jaden Newman

I want to preface this by saying I’m a Jaden Newman guy. He’s always fun to watch in the ring, plus I had the privilege of calling a match with him down at Resolute Wrestling leading to me finding out that he’s actually hilarious. What I’m trying to say is he’s #1. Knowing Jaden and seeing Brickster go toe to toe with Kerry Awful at the last SUP show, this was destined to be a blast. Spoiler alert: the match was a lot of fun with both guys having bright spots along the way. Brickster gets the win but both guys are on my watch list for the rest of 2018.

Kerry Awful vs. Teddy King

Wasn’t sure what to expect between a Carnie and whatever the hell Teddy King is, so I wasn’t surprised one bit that this match featured a wet willy. Kerry was looking to make a statement coming off that Brett Ison loss and boy did he look good. Teddy, or Terry as Brandon Vick would come to know him as, brought the fight to The Dog Face Gargoyle, but this was Kerry’s night. Awful showing some submission work in this victory shows that his game is always expanding. Post match it was announced that Kerry would be filling in for the injured Gunner Miller at SCI this year which had the SUP universe all kinds of pumped up.

Nick Iggy vs. Brett Ison

After Brett cleared through Kerry Awful like he did back in April, it was time for The Ringleader to step right up for his crack at The Pitbull. Iggy was all over Ison even before the bell could ring, hammering down shot after shot. Iggy was on the hunt for blood, y’all. These two beat the shit out of each other in a sense that I would describe this more as a ‘fight’ than a wrestling match. Nick threw everything he had at Brett but it just didn’t matter. Ison wins with an absolutely brutal Street Justice. Tripp Cassidy hits the ring post match to protect Iggy from anymore punishment as Brett made his out of the ring. On his way to the back, I was able to get an exclusive quote from Brett Ison: “That’s two.”

Tripp Cassidy vs. Allie Kat

This match may have ended being more emotional than anything ever in the history of wrestling. The relationship between these two is well noted, meaning I had tissues ready and on hand. Tripp made Allie earn everything in this match and just about everything he threw at her she had an answer for. I say just about because Tripp did get the win, but this felt like a win for everyone involved. After the match, Tripp said some heart felt words to Allie and then her Carnie-godparents carried her around the ring Lombardi style. God I love wrestling.

O’Shay Edwards vs. Calvin Tankman vs. Cabana Man Dan

What a bunch of badasses, huh? Chops, slaps, flop chops, chop slaps this match had it all. The size advantage that Dan was having to deal with was made up for quickly thanks to his flip flop work. This was my first time seeing Tankman live but it will not be the last. O’Shay wins his open invitation and keeps his SUP momentum going.

Kevin Ku vs. Eddy Only

Another super fun, brutal match featuring Kevin Ku…you’re shocked, I know. I hadn’t seen a ton of Eddy before this match so it was eye opening seeing him live and going toe to toe with someone like Ku. Great offensive work by both men as they matched up well and certainly had chemistry in the ring. Ku gets the hard fought win keeping his stellar 2018 campaign rolling along.

Danny Adams vs. Marko Stunt

First off, Marko has the BEST entrance in SUP right now. The moves, the music, the scooter it’s all A++. This was very much a battle of styles with Danny trying to use the size advantage but Marko is legit all over the place so it’s kind of hard to keep the guy down. Stunt gets the win after some absolute fuckery by both dudes. Post match beatdown on Stunt by #NoNewFriends means this rivalry may be far from over.

Dominic Garrini vs. Jeff Cobb – Bonestorm Title Match

Going into this match the word on the street was that these guys were going to beat the hell out of each other…the street was right. Both men gave just as much as they got which led to another matchup that felt more like a scrap than anything. More than once, Cobb showed off that super human strength by launching Garrini across the ring. That’s right – I can confirm that Cobb has ‘Hulk strength.’ Dom showed off the warrior spirit that he has fighting back to get the victory and retain his championship. This was a top notch main event on a top notch show.

After a post show run to Rudie’s for wrestling themed drinks, poutine and shrimp cocktails it was time to head back home. I want to give a shout out to everyone that came up and said hi to us yesterday as we made new friends along with seeing the familiar faces that help make SUP the environment it is. We’ll be counting down the days until August 5th, y’all.
