Doctor Strange Is Marvel’s MVP

Okay….last Avengers: Infinity War article, I swear. Maybe. I just keep thinking of things. That’s how my brain works, and I just can’t help myself. But, I feel like we haven’t done enough looking at the big picture. And, the big picture is, “okay – where do we go from here?” Well, our boy Doctor Strange, #3 on the Avenger’s: Infinity War Power Rankings, may be the key to it all.

But, it’s not just what he can do for the future. It’s what he’s done in the past as well.

2016’s Doctor Strange was a phenomenal movie. I was initially worried because some of the source material gets pretty out there. I didn’t know how they were going to translate that to the big screen. Plus, Doctor Strange is one of Marvel’s lesser known properties, so he hits theaters without the fanfare of, say, a Captain America or Spider-Man. But, the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch was a stroke of brilliance. Not only does he nail the part of Stephen Strange, but it was a big enough name to raise some eyebrows.

I still say the success of Guardians of the Galaxy was the pivotal moment for the MCU. Because that movie killed at the box office, it basically gave Marvel free reign to explore their entire mythos. Between establishing that sort of brand, getting Cumberbatch, and making the picture feel unique, there was no denying Doctor Strange. It’s one of my personal favorite Marvel movies. And, I’m eager to see him become a more integral figure in the MCU as they keep producing movies (hopefully).

But, as for the character itself….

Well, he seems to know more about Thanos and how to beat him than any of the Avengers. The Guardians of the Galaxy probably have that market cornered, but they’ve shown that they aren’t much of a match for Thanos. It’s going to take something outside of brute force to take down the Mad Titan. Strange is the only guy with experience traveling through alternate dimensions and manipulating time.

I think the dude’s going to end up being the key to unraveling it all. Think about it – in Avengers: Infinity War, he uses the Time Stone to examine over 14 million potential outcomes, and only sees one where the Avengers win. You would think that he knows what he’s doing and forfeited the Time Stone to Thanos because it sets into motion that one event. He even tells Tony Stark, “it was the only way,” before dissolving into oblivion himself.

What do we know about the Soul Stone? It allows you to bring people back from the dead, or at least access a separate plane of existence where the dead are alive. Weird sounding, I know. And, what do we know about the Time Stone? It gives you the power to manipulate time, moving backwards freely to alter events if you so choose. So, these sorts of concepts have already been introduced into the MCU. My guess is that Strange trusts Stark to figure it out. Maybe they’ll bring our heroes back unbeknownst to Thanos and drop a big shit sandwich on his doorstep. Time (or Soul) will tell – haha nice, did you see what I did there?

All in all, I’m #TeamStrange and I don’t care who knows it!
