The SoBros Top 10: Marvel Movies

Every now and then, us SoBros get together and debate any number of topics. Sometimes, those topics are actually safe to post in the public forum. So, everyone turns in a ballot. Their top five options – Rank #1 is worth five points, Rank #2 is worth four, so on and so forth. I tabulate the results and spit them out into a list. This is known as The SoBros Top 10. Today, we’re talkin’ Marvel movies, folks.

Avengers: Infinity Wars is in theaters this week and it sparked a great debate in the SoBros Slack group a week or so ago. What is the greatest offering that this incredible 16-film universe has given us? We went back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, until finally all ballots were cast.

This was easily our most involved debate to date. I talked to “Nature Boy” Brandon Vick, John Mosley, Poppa Bear, Rubber Rooster, Jonas Brotherly, Herbie Brooks, and Smokey. Pretty close to the whole damn team. And, the results are in.

Others receiving votes: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ant-Man

The SoBros Top 10: Marvel Movies

9T. Doctor Strange (4 points) – “Nature Boy” and I were the only two who had Doctor Strange on their list – something that surprised me a little bit. But, I loved the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch, the fantasy aspect of the character and film as a whole, the old school villain in Kaecilius, Wong, and the introduction of Dormammu.

9T. Thor (4 points) – Our first glimpse at the God of Thunder was masterfully done, but just as important was the introduction of the great villain in the MCU (in my opinion), Loki.

8. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 (6 points) – Vol. 2 was more of the same from the Guardians franchise, and believe me when I say that that is indeed a good thing. You simply can’t go wrong by adding Kurt Russell to a movie.

7. Captain America: Civil War (8 points) – Big fan of seeing all the heroes (except for Thor and Hulk) get together and wreck some shit. The Civil War arc was pretty ambitious, but they pulled it off rather nicely.

6. Black Panther (9 points) – I’d be curious to see where this one ranks once the entire team has caught up on it. To my knowledge, everyone that did see it in theaters had it ranked in their top five. That said, I thought it was pretty amazing. I love the rich history of this character.

“This movie reshaped the MCU in a big way! Pulling away from cosmic battles and New York to take us away to another unknown land rich with characters and tradition.” -Jonas Brotherly

5. The Avengers (10 points) – In hindsight, it’s easy to look past The Avengers – it was a pretty simple story. But, I’m glad others on the team still recognize it. It was pretty ambitious (noticing a trend from the folks at Marvel Studios?), even for the 2012 MCU that hadn’t quite sprawled into what it is today. It could’ve easily been a clusterfuck, but wasn’t really at all.

“The build up of five movies culminated in the team-up movie my inner child was dying for! And, the image of all our finest superhero’s standing back-to-back in New York is an absolute classic.” -Jonas Brotherly

4. Iron Man (13 points) – Full disclosure: I’ve never been a big Iron Man fan. This was actually one of the more boring MCU films in my book, but the team has spoken. So, I’ll send this one over Jonas Brotherly (who had this ranked as his #1) as well:

“It would be an injustice to not have the movie that kicked off the entire MCU and gave us RDJ as our Iron man on this list.”

3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (14 points) – I remember the eyebrows raising when it was announced that The Winter Soldier would be the next foil for Captain America. But, man – was it awesome in execution or what?

“The first MCU movie to shift the universe and bring a different tone, and it has Cap struggling with adjusting to being displaced in time while diving into the world of espionage.” -Jonas Brotherly

Cap was due for a win after Captain America: The First Avenger got the character off to a slow start, and The Winter Soldier was just that.

2. Thor: Ragnarok (16 points) – It’s my personal favorite MCU movie, but I’m happy to see it recognized by the rest of the team as well. It revitalized the Thor franchise, which it desperately needed after the abysmal Thor: The Dark World. But, Ragnarok had a complete cast of characters and brought the humor like no other MCU movie before it.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy (30 points) – 30 out of a possible max of 40 points ain’t bad. It was on all but one ballot, and I had it at #2. So, no real gripes from me. I think this is the movie that proved Marvel truly is a golden goose and gave them free reign to explore other, more “out there” Marvel properties. Without this movie, Infinity War isn’t what it is today.
