The SoBros Network crew had a little team outing yesterday to see Marvel’s latest offering, Black Panther. Below are our quick thoughts on the movie, starting with our resident film critic..

BLACK PANTHER

4.5 out of 5 stars

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is changing the game and making history with this triumphant, distinctive tale about the flaws of humankind that is thoughtfully told with a racial conscience.

Chadwick Boseman is extraordinary as the King of Wakanda and Michael B. Jordan has an unlimited amount of swag as Killmonger. Their machismo is no match for their amazing female co-stars, conquering with undeniable confidence by bringing their own style of badassness to the big screen.

There’s mesmerizing beauty within the entire production, easily allowing the culture, music and setting to leave you breathless. Director Ryan Coogler has created a world that is astonishing, yet not as foreign as we may believe.

Marvel had quite the task on their hand to create a believable Wakanda, but they knocked it out of the park. We’re taken to a place of great wonder, beauty, and technological marvel (pardon the pun). Black Panther is truly equal parts magic and equal parts technology – that’s not something we saw in Captain America: Civil War, so I’m thankful to see time spent truly exploring the mystical powers of this iconic super hero.

Chadwick Boseman was excellent as T’Challa, emoting in such a way that even I felt every tinge of amazement, pain, comfort or confusion that came across his face. This is an incredibly complex character in the Marvel mythology, so I’m happy that they nailed this casting.

Michael B. Jordan was charismatic and electric as Erik Killmonger, and like Brandon pointed out, the Dora Milaje had a field day as the show-stealing badasses on the battlefield. Overall, I give it a 4/5.

Black Panther is a game changer! And instantly a top tier Marvel movie. What makes this movie work so damn well is that it’s less a movie about “The Black Panther” and more about the surrounding characters, their country, their loyalty, and their honor to tradition. Each character has their own view of what is right for Wakanda and what they fight for, which immerses you into their world instantly.

Chadwick Boseman brilliantly embodies The Black Panther, not only as the super hero but also as the king! He has moments of doubt but they don’t overtake him and he handles every situation that comes at him with honor to the traditions of his countries past and a regal-ness that draws you into what he views Wakanda as and makes you believe he is the king.

Black Panther boasts some of the best villains in the MCU to date, they burst onto the scene with motives that drive the story and it grounds the movie in a way that makes their wants seem logical. Michael B. Jordan as Erik Kilmonger shows up and wrecks shit! In a fashion that almost has you rooting for him to succeed, his emotional story and the lengths he goes to get what he believes is his give him a clear purpose and you believe in how dangerous he is.
