Giants at Titans: Week 1 Spread & DFS Gambling Preview (2022)

Introduction

The Tennessee Titans will host the New York Giants during Week 1 of the 2022-23 NFL season. Opening kickoff is 3:25 p.m. CT on September 11.

The Titans finished last season with a 12-5 record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs. They lost their opening playoff game to the Cincinnati Bengals during the divisional round. In 2022, the Titans are expected to compete with the Indianapolis Colts for the AFC South crown. While the organization has Super Bowl aspirations, there’s a lot of doubt about whether quarterback Ryan Tannehill can get them over the hump. Tannehill lost both of his starting wide receivers (A.J. Brown, Julio Jones) but gained tight end Austin Hooper, free agent Robert Woods, and first rounder Treylon Burks.

As for the New York Giants, they’re expected to compete with the Washington Commanders for third place in the NFC East. The Giants finished 2021 with a 4-13 record. Since 2017, the Giants are 22-59. Former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will make his debut as Giants head coach. New York returns their core backfield of quarterback Daniel Jones and oft-injured running back Saquon Barkley.

The Titans Will Win / Cover If…

Running game and defense. That’s possibly truer than ever since Tennessee must adjust to life without former No. 1 wide receiver A.J. Brown. Burks is a rookie who’ll need some time before he’s a big factor and Woods isn’t even a full year removed from an ACL injury.

The Giants Will Win / Cover If…

The Titans are the type of team that will take out the PAW Patrol but lose to the Kitten Catastrophe Crew. In 2021, Tennessee lost games when they were medium to heavy favorites against the Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, Houston Texans, and the Cincinnati Bengals. Yet, the Titans pulled off big wins against the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, and the Indianapolis Colts twice. This trend has gone on for decades.

Typically, Tennessee improves as the regular season progresses. I wouldn’t expect that to change because they’re learning to play with new wide receivers, offensive line modifications, no top pass-rusher Harold Landry, and an unproven quartet of cornerbacks who are age 24 or younger.

The Giants are catching an unfamiliar opponent at a good time. While New York’s roster lacks talent, they have a nice trio of wide receivers with Toney, Shepard, and Golladay. If New York can get enough pass protection, then they could generate some big plays downfield. New York has favorable skill position assets that would give them an advantage in a shootout situation.

Giants at Titans: Best Bet, DFS Picks:

UNDER 43.5

New York doesn’t have the offensive firepower to force Tennessee out of its comfort zone. Therefore, expect Tennessee to use a conservative offense that’s emphasizes Henry, multiple tight end sets, and simple passes / gadget plays that get Woods and Burks acclimated to the system. I’m guessing New York tries to keep it simple for their unproven quarterback. That means an offensive game plan full of Barkley and Brieda.

My main concern is if New York scores some garbage touchdowns after Tennessee takes a big lead into the fourth quarter. Other than that, I see two teams shortening the game with clock management.

DERRICK HENRY

Duh.

Kadarius Toney (GPP only)

This is a tough one because nobody knows how Daboll will split reps among his wide receivers. Toney, the 2021 No. 20 overall pick, has the lowest floor and highest ceiling on this offense. He showed his upside when he had 10 catches for 189 yards against the Dallas Cowboys. Wide receivers can make big strides in Year No. 2. Pro Football Focus projects him to see most of his snaps against Titans nickelback Roger McCreary.

As for the safest wide receiver, probably Shepard but not enough for a cash game option.

Giants at Titans: Final Thoughts

The Titans should win this game easily but god only knows how many times I’ve said / thought that in the past when they’re heavy favorites. I’m very concerned about Tennessee’s early season passing game. Tannehill idolizes his tight ends so he should love Hooper as a security blanket. Is Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing creative enough to maximize the output of Woods?
