DeVonta Smith Is The 2020 SEC MVP

"Big Natural" Stoney Keeley awards the fake, made up honor of SEC MVP to DeVonta Smith for a stellar 2020 campaign.

It’s been a wild year in the SEC – I mean, hell – who’d have thought back in August that we’d actually make our way through the season and get to the finish line?!? But, it almost feels like the more things change, the more they stay the same. The Alabama Crimson Tide steamrolled their way to a 10-0 SEC record behind one the most prolific offenses college football has ever seen. As we sit here before the SEC Championship game, it’s time to hand out the totally fake and made up SoBros Network SEC MVP award.

Looking around the landscape of the league makes this year’s MVP award a lot tougher than it was in 2019, when Joe Burrow was torching people en route to one of the best college football seasons of all time. There are options. Kyle Trask deserves some love for how he’s helped get that Florida Gators offense going. But, I’m landing somewhere on that vaunted Tide offense this year. The question is whether you go with the quarterback, Mac Jones, who’s been surprisingly good this season. Or, do you go with the star wide receiver? I mean…you read the headline….you know where I’m going with this.

Jones has been stellar, no doubt, and I’m happy to see him step out of the shadow of Tua Tagovailoa and prove to people that he’s damn good in his own right. But, quarterbacking this offense is like being handed the keys to a Ferrari. To me, there’s no doubt about the fact that DeVonta Smith is the best player in college football this season.

You could put him in just about any offense on just about any team and you’d have an instant upgrade at the receiver position. The guy is fast and athletic, but he pairs it with a savvy sense of route running and a knack for getting open. Not to mention, he’s incredible at the point of the catch. He wins contested catches – look at that absurd touchdown in the LSU game. I mean, you name it – Smith can do it. Then, there’s the Arkansas game – the offense got off to a sluggish start, so what do they do? They put Smith back there to return a punt, and the dude takes it to the house for a touchdown.

That is a crystal clear example of value – you need something done, you give the job to DeVonta Smith. Personally, I think he should win the Heisman. But, since I do have control over this fake arbitrary MVP award, I’m definitely going to give it to him. Your SoBros Network 2020 SEC MVP is DeVonta Smith.
