Alright, folks – the big week is upon us! Your boy here has a little bit of time off from the day job next week, so I’m taking some time to focus on SoBros stuff and spend time with my family. I get sucked into a zone sometimes and forget to check in on those who matter most. It’s a big time character flaw of mine and I’ll own up to it – I put work before friends and family way too often. So, I hope you all have the opportunity to do the same, at least for a day or two, over this fine holiday week. But, nonetheless, since we always think it’s wise to revisit your feelings, and understand that people can change, I felt it appropriate to look back at our definitive power rankings of Thanksgiving side dishes.

This list initially came out four years ago, and was met with, for the most part, pure criticism. I didn’t have too many people agree with me, which honestly surprised me a little bit. I mean, sweet potatoes are all the rage right now. Or, was that five years ago? I can’t keep up with everything. I’ve begun to realize what an old man I really am when it comes to food – FFS, I think DOTS are the greatest candy on Earth. I also catch myself being a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian because people drive me nuts sometimes and I just don’t want to like things that everyone else likes. Whatever.

Thanksgiving Side Dishes (Updated for 2021)

10. Rolls
9. Turnip greens
8. Sweet potato pie
7. Glazed carrots
6. Mashed potatoes
5. Corn
4. Sweet potatoes
3. Mac and cheese
2. Cranberry sauce
1. Green bean casserole

I am ready to devour an entire bowl of green bean casserole.

And, believe it or not, I am completely here for the cranberry sauce, too. Sue me. I don’t think anything tastes as quintessentially Thanksgiving as a piece of turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. I actually don’t even like turkey all that much. I ONLY eat it combined with the stuffing. I mean, my mom can cook a damn ham, so that’s my meat of choice for the big day. But, you gotta throw at least one piece of turkey with some stuffing and cranberry sauce in there.

The glazed carrots are climbing the power rankings this year, too. I’ve barely gotten off the couch this week at all, so I’ve been exploring the depths of our cable’s On Demand feature. Went down a Food Network rabbit hole and found this recipe for brown sugar, honey, and mint roasted carrots that ’bout has me ready to hump.

The important question here is do we count stuffing as a side? I didn’t count it last year – it’s a main dish in my book. The main course of Thanksgiving is “turkey and stuffing” to me. So, I left it off, but for what it’s worth, if you do want to count it as a side, I’m perfectly fine with it being #1 on this list. I could eat my weight in stuffing.

Alright, SoBros Nation – where did I get it wrong? Light up the comments, and have a happy Thanksgiving!
