Is Every Offensive Alabama Player a Heisman Candidate?!?!

Is it possible that Alabama has four different Heisman contenders?!?!

Do we even know if they’re going to give out the Heisman Trophy this year? I don’t – anyway, we’re going to keep on rolling with the Heisman Watch here on SoBros Network and pretend like everything is okay and we’re going to get a full, normal season of college football. Here’s the Heisman Watch intro:

The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.

Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2020 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.

2020 HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 7

5. Brady White, Memphis QB – How about the stones on Brady White and the Memphis Tigers for coming back and stealing that game away from UCF on Saturday? White was amazing, going a 34/50 for a gaudy 486 yards and SIX touchdowns, with a seventh total touchdown on the ground. Memphis survived the shootout by the skin of their teeth, winning 50-49.

4. Zach Wilson, BYU QB – The Cougars are rolling in 2020 with Wilson at the helm. They’ve climbed to #12 in the AP Poll behind a whopping 43.6 points per game. Against Houston on Saturday, Wilson went 25/35 for 400 yards and four touchdowns. He now has 18 total total touchdowns on the season (counting rushing). Maybe it’s time we put him up there with the legit contenders for the Heisman.

3. Jaylen Waddle, Alabama WR – Waddle continues to electrify as Alabama’s veritable Swiss Army Knife. The guy can line up anywhere and do it all for this offense. Against Georgia, he caught six balls for 161 yards with a touchdown. Dude was averaging 26.8 yards per catch on Saturday night, and had a 90-yarder under his belt to boot. Forget the Heisman – Waddle might be making his case for WR1 in the NFL Draft next spring.

2. Trevor Lawrence, Clemson QB – Factoring in the entire season, Lawrence is really starting to put a stranglehold on this year’s award. I don’t know who is even going to seriously challenge him for the Heisman at this point. As the Tigers absolutely dominated Georgia Tech, Lawrence posted a 226.8 passer rating, going 24/32 for 404 yards, FIVE touchdowns, and a pick. Take into account his rushing scores, and the dude has 19 total touchdowns on the season.

1. DeVonta Smith, Alabama WR – Smith lands at #8 in the FBS in receiving yards with 483 yards on the season after a masterful performance against the Georgia Bulldogs, who boasted the best defense in the country going into Saturday’s game. In the 41-24 victory, Smith had 11 catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

Obviously, we gotta start throwing his name into the Heisman hat, but is it completely nuts to say that the Crimson Tide has four viable Heisman candidates?!?! I mean, Waddle has shown up on the Heisman Watch several times already this season. Najee Harris woke up a week ago, Mac Jones has been steady, and now Smith is posting big numbers.

This Alabama offense is freaking bonkers, and they could have more than one guy in New York (wait – are they still doing that?) because of it.
