Kyle Trask, Welcome to the Heisman Race

Kyle Trask had himself A DAY as the Florida Gators lit up Ole Miss 51-35 on Saturday.

Do we even know if they’re going to give out the Heisman Trophy this year? I don’t – anyway, we’re going to keep on rolling with the Heisman Watch here on SoBros Network and pretend like everything is okay and we’re going to get a full, normal season of college football. Here’s the Heisman Watch intro:

The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.

Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2020 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.

2020 HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 4

5. Kyle Pitts, Florida TE – Questions surrounded this Gators offense this season in terms of who was going to step up and make the plays. At least through this first game, Pitts gave that question a resounding answer, going for 170 yards and four touchdowns on eight catches. Ole Miss had absolutely no answer for the guy.

4. K.J. Costello, Mississippi State QB – HoW iS mIkE lEaCh’S sYsTeM gOiNg To WoRk In ThE sEc?!?!?! Well, I think we saw what it’s capable of right off the bat against the defending National Champions, LSU. Not to mention the fact that the Bulldogs had to go on the road to do it. Crazy. Mike Leach has found his next NCAA passing leader (the joke being that that’s all Leach produces) in Costello, who went 36/60 for 623 yards and five touchdowns. SIX. HUNDRED. TWENTY-THREE. YARDS.

3. Skylar Thompson, Kansas State QB – Big time heroics from the Wildcats, as Thompson and company stunned the Sooners. K-State could have very well ended the CFP hopes of Oklahoma. He went 18/25 for 334 yards, one touchdown, and a 197.4 rating ON THE ROAD at Oklahoma. He also tacked on three rushing touchdowns in the stunner. The Sooners are going to have to do some soul-searching this week because of that performance.

2. Jaylen Waddle, Alabama WR – With Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III BOTH playing in the NFL, Waddle figured to see an expanded role in that Tide offense. Still, the general thinking was that DeVonta Smith would be “the guy” this season. Those folks are sleeping on just how good Waddle is, and how versatile he can be. Waddle really can do it all for Alabama, and even showed some added toughness in coming down with a vicious contested catch against Missouri. He finished the day with eight catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns on the day – he could end up being interesting to watch in this year’s Heisman race.

1. Kyle Trask, Florida QB – Credit to Ole Miss – it looked like they were going to be a scrappy out at home early on. They did fight a little harder than we all expected. But, the Gators putting 51 points on the board is exactly what we thought was possible with another season of Dan Mullen and Trask at the helm. This team looks like it could be overwhelming on offense.

Trask went 30/42 for 416 yards and a whopping SIX touchdown passes. That was good for a 201.8 rating, and it officially announces him as the dark horse Heisman contender that some of the analysts thought he could be. Could the Gators parlay this into a National Championship run? *eyes emoji*
