D’Eriq King Asserts Himself in the Heisman Discussion

"Big Natural" Stoney Keeley takes a look at the best performances of the week on the Heisman Watch.

Do we even know if they’re going to give out the Heisman Trophy this year? I don’t – anyway, we’re going to keep on rolling with the Heisman Watch here on SoBros Network and pretend like everything is okay and we’re going to get a full, normal season of college football. Here’s the Heisman Watch intro:

The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.

Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2020 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.

2020 Heisman Watch: Week 3

5. Cam’Ron Harris, Miami RB – Nine carries for 134 yards and a touchdown as Miami bested Louisville in prime time on Saturday night. Harris averaged 14.9 yards per carry in that game, and don’t look now, but dude is averaging 10.3 yards per carry on the season.

4. Ian Book, Notre Dame QB – Alright, look – does Book’s stat line end up on the Heisman Watch in a normal week? Probably not – but this is a thin slate of games we’re dealing with and someone from the Irish had to be on this list for that 52-0 BEATDOWN they put on South Florida. Book just so happened to be the dude that punched in three rushing touchdowns, and went 12/19 for 143 yards through the air. Four different dudes scored a rushing touchdown on Saturday, and none of them were the guy who was on the Heisman Watch last week (Kyren Williams). This Irish team is deep and deadly on offense.

3. Trevor Lawrence, Clemson QB – It was a bit of a quiet day for the Heisman favorite, as his services weren’t really needed for the Tigers to rock The Citadel 49-0. Still, in limited action, Lawrence was able to pad the stats for that Heisman case, going 8/9 for 168 yards and three touchdowns, with another score on the ground.

2. Shane Buechele, SMU QB – SMU is 2-0 with their stud quarterback at the helm. Against North Texas on Saturday, Buechele did pure numbers. He went 24/33 for 344 yards, FOUR touchdowns, and a passer rating of 200.3. Buechele also tacked on 29 yards and a touchdown on the ground as the Mustangs LIT UP the Mean Green, 65-35.

1. D’Eriq King, Miami QB – Clutch, clutch game from King, who looked like the quarterback we thought could push for the 2020 Heisman before the season started. It was the only big marquee match of the weekend, and King showed out – piling up 325 yards and three touchdowns through the air as the Hurricanes beat Louisville 47-34 IN Louisville.
