What would you say if I told you there was a badass heist film written/directed by David Mamet with a cast that included Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito, Delroy Lindo and Sam Rockwell? Well, that movie totally exists! Mamet even went the easy route giving the film the simple title of Heist.

Now, if you’re wondering how this film slipped under your radar, let me tell you that story resides with when it was released. The film debuted on November 9, 2001. A time in American history when no one was really wanting to go to the theater. Add in the fact that one of the big heists of the film involves an airplane being hijacked and you may have a problem for the time.

Still, the film brought in about $28.5 million, but with a budget of $39 million, it still was looked at as a box office failure. Thankfully, the film has gone on to do well on home video, with it being a popular rental back in the days when we still rented movies from brick and mortar stores.

The film is centered around a couple of skilled thieves played by Hackman, Lindo, and Rebecca Pidgeon. The crew is forced into one final job by their longtime fence played by DeVito. DeVito goes on to force his nephew, played by Rockwell, who is excellent as always, in on the job so he has an eye on all the players.

From here, there are double, triple and even quadruple crosses with everyone constantly playing chess with each other’s lives. Hackman is awesome as the aged criminal who is ready to get out of the life. Lindo is his best friend and long time accomplice, while Pidgeon plays Hackman’s wife. DeVito steals just about every scene he’s in as the super conniving antagonist of the caper. Seeing everyone play off each other really has the viewer thinking “Can anyone be trusted?

Heist is currently free on Pluto TV and can be rented from all your favorite VOD services.
