WNBA Mock Draft: Round 1

"The General" John Mosley and Haley team up for a good old fashioned WNBA mock draft.

With tomorrow’s big WNBA virtual draft looming, Haley and I got together for some mock draft shenanigans. She has been an avid Lady Vol fan her whole life, even going so far as to listing them as her favorite team of any sport. Haley knows her women’s basketball folks. I, on the other hand, was much more into the Lady Vols during the Pat Summit years. The Kara Lawson and Candace Parker teams are my bread n’ butter. That said, I have tapped back into my love of Lady Vol basketball since we’ve been together. Before the pandemic, we were both very excited for this year’s tourney because of how deep the talent pool seemed to be. We took that energy and put together our best guess for what should be a fun draft.

2020 WNBA Mock Draft

1. New York Liberty- Sabrina Ionescu. Guard. Oregon.

Ionescu was clearly the #1 women’s talent this year. No one has been talked about more and rightfully so, as this girl can do it all. She’s gonna bring assists, points and rebounds. To quote Haley, she is a “do-it-all guard.” She’ll be joining a young core in New York that are in full rebuild mode.

2. Dallas Wings- Satou Sabally. Forward. Oregon.

Haley said Sabally may be the most versatile player in the draft. She’ll bring a burst to whoever picks her but she feels like a perfect fit to this Wings roster. This may very well be the youngest team in the league so bringing in someone as dynamic as Sabally could make for a legit championship building block down the road.

3. Indiana Fever- Lauren Cox. Power Forward. Baylor.

Cox nearly averaged a double double in her last year at Baylor. She’ll join a Fever team looking for youth in the post. She’ll also make for a consistent one-two punch with Tiara McCowan

4. Atlanta Dream- Chennedy Carter. Guard. Texas A&M.

My oh my no player in this first round has been brought up in conversation more than Carter. She’s had some run-ins with the Lady Vols, which Haley may or may not ever forget, but we’re in agreement that she is a perfect fit for the Dream. ATL needs scoring right now and there may not be a more pure scorer in this draft than Chennedy Carter.

5. Dallas Wings- Tyasha Harris. Guard. South Carolina.

The Wings are in need of a true point guard so why not bring in a legit floor general like Ty Harris? Her career started with a national title at South Carolina in her freshman year then proceeded to be coached up by Dawn Staley for three more seasons. It wouldn’t hurt to add Harris to a roster that already includes former teammates Kaela Davis and Allisha Gray

6. Minnesota Lynx- Ruthy Hebard. Forward. Oregon.

Our third Oregon player off the board in the first six picks. Ionescu is absolutely deserving of all the talk she gets, but this Oregon team had some other key cogs in their drive to a title. Hebard shot 68.5% from the field in her final season to go along with near double double numbers game in and game out. She leaves Oregon as the Pac 12 all time leader in career field goal percentage. She is as efficient as it gets and will provide immediate post relief for the Lynx.

7. Dallas Wings- Kiah Gillespie. Forward. Florida State.

This one may be a little out of the box but Gillespie’s numbers were just too impressive to overlook. She had fifteens points and sixteen rebounds in the ACC tourney semifinal and followed that up with twenty five points and nine rebounds in the ACC final. It’s not just that she puts up numbers she puts them up in big games against elite competition. Another one of those “building block” players.

8. Chicago Sky-Te’a Cooper. Guard. Baylor.

Cooper had an interesting college career but showed in her only year at Baylor that she can bring a little of everything to the table. It doesn’t hurt that noted friend Diamond DeShields already plays for the Sky.

9. Dallas Wings- Beatrice Mompremier. Forward. Miami.

Mompremier was a double double machine at The U but heads into the draft with some injury questions. With three picks already locked in Dallas could use this pick to draft a high caliber prospect that may need some time to heal.

10. Phoenix Mercury- Crystal Dangerfield. Guard. UConn,

The former Blackman stand out finished her career in Connecticut top ten in assists all time. Dangerfield also brings a grit to go along with her leadership on the court. Diana Taurasi has been holding down the backcourt for a while now so why not snag another former Husky to wait in the wings?

11. Seattle Storm- Megan Walker. Forward. UConn.

Walker could go before as their is some buzz around her after leaving Connecticut early. This move seems like it could make for an easy transition for Walker moving into the Seattle system as she will instantly become the most versatile forward on the roster.

12. New York Liberty- Mikiah Herbert Harrigan. Forward. South Carolina.

With the last pick of the first round we have the Liberty taking Harrigan who went from trying to transfer out of South Carolina to being SEC Tournament MVP. She brings size along with an ability to hit outside shots. She also showed tremendous improvement throughout her Gamecock career.
