BIRDS OF PREY

3.5 out of 5 stars

Harley Quinn’s fantabulous emancipation is a rollicking carnival of carnage that brings a sadistic sisterhood to town. Bursting with color and glitter, director Cathy Yan shapes a specific kind of marvelous madness that perfectly matches Quinn’s archaic spirit. Stellar fight sequences, absurd violence, and a nasty sense of humor. And surprisingly, there’s this strange sort of sweetness added to its twisted fun.

Margot Robbie has created something special with Quinn. She’s unequivocally in tune with her character and the unapologetic attitude she wears while wreaking havoc. Quinn is lovely and lethal, and as our wacky storyteller – she’s calling the shots in this chaotic cartoon come to life. And with her new best friends, each having their own story to tell, they’re torching a man’s world that’s been using and abusing them. These women kick serious ass.

Besides Robbie, no one is having more of a blast than Ewan McGregor as the big baddie. It’s a tough task to be sinister and funny, but McGregor does it in style. Him and Robbie are on another level than everyone else.

DC’s latest is bold and beautiful and bonkers. A solid start for HQ to spread her wings and fly.
