Hard to believe we’re already halfway through another season of NFL football. But, you know what that means – time to pass out my NFL midseason awards for 2019.

NFL Midseason Awards (2019)

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Josh Jacobs – Forget ‘Rookie of the Year’ – I think Jacobs deserves some consideration for MVP. At least, if you’re looking at the top 10-20 candidates, he’s in that conversation. Absolutely love what he’s been able to do as a rookie, igniting that Oakland Raiders offense. He’s currently 7th in the NFL in rushing yards with 740. He has six touchdowns. 59% of his carries and yardage have come in the last four games. The arrow’s pointing up – he’s only going to get better and more productive as the season goes on.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Nick Bosa – The rookie Niners defensive end looks like a damn human tornado out on the field. Seven sacks, 12 tackles for loss, a pass deflected, an interception, and a forced fumble. He’s one of the most disruptive forces in the NFL this season. Shout out to Jacksonville’s Josh Allen and all, but Bosa is the clear choice here.

Coach of the Year: Sean Payton – Having to navigate that tricky quarterback situation, and doing so by winning games however they needed to win them, was truly impressive even for a coach who has been impressive his entire time in New Orleans. I have to give the nod to Payton here, but will definitely listen to arguments for Kyle Shanahan and Bill Belichick.

Offensive Player of the Year: Michael Thomas – Thomas is having an outstanding season for the Saints. He’s leading the NFL in receiving yards with 875 and receptions with 73. He has four touchdowns. But, perhaps most importantly, he’s leading the NFL in first down receptions with 45. Think about that – 62% of his receptions go for first downs. Albeit Teddy Bridgewater is a damn good backup, he’s still no Drew Brees. Thomas deserves a ton of credit for a stellar 2019. I wanted badly to put Mike Evans here because of how ridiculous he is, but the critical stats point in favor of Thomas.

Defensive Player of the Year: Shaq Barrett – He’s the current NFL sack leader with 10.5, and the dude is absolutely balling out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season. In addition to his sack numbers, he has 12 tackles for loss, two passes deflected, an interception, and four forced fumbles. If he keeps this pace up, he’ll have a shot at the sack record currently held by Michael Strahan. I would also mention Minkah Fitzpatrick and Stephon Gilmore in the conversation, too.

League MVP: Christian McCaffrey – It’s a tight race between McCaffrey, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, and Russell Wilson. I’m not sure you could really go wrong with any candidate, but I don’t know that any individual means more to his team than McCaffrey does. I mean, think of where the Carolina Panthers would be without him. McCaffrey already has 1,244 yards from scrimmage. He’s second in the league in rushing with 881 yards. He leads the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 10. Plus, he has 42 catches for 363 and three more touchdowns to boot. He does it all for the Panthers, and they’re in the race in the NFC because of him.
