What UFC 242 Taught Me

Khabib is 100% that guy: I’ve been following the UFC since the Liddell era and I’ve got to say, I don’t think we’ve seen a more dominant fighter performance to performance. Yes GSP controlled…like…all of his opponents (except Johny Hedricks lol) but the level of suffocation that Khabib brings from his grappling is amazing. I’ll say it. Khabib is a more vicious GSP. Dustin Poirier trained his ass off to defend against Khabib and it just didn’t matter. If ‘The Eagle’ turns in a performance like this against Tony Ferguson, he’s gonna have to be in that GOAT discussion at lightweight at the very least.

MMA judging is crazy: Of course, this is in reference to the Felder/Edson decision. Don’t get me wrong – I was rooting for Paul Felder and am stoked for him to get the win, but I just don’t see how the scorecards went the way they did. I had it 29-28 Edson, so to see two separate cards go 30-27 was crazy, let alone one of those was for Felder. Thankfully, we’re not in the ghastly realm of boxing scoring yet, but this was certainly a wacky set of scoring.

Curtis Blaydes will detonate your nose: Blaydes mauled Shamil Abdurakhimov before completely crushing his nose leading to a second round TKO victory. The win has Blaydes on the cusp of another top five fight after he was worked over big time by Francis Ngannou last November.

Ottman Azaitar with the starch: What a debut for the German. A first round knockout which pushes his record to 12-0 with 11 finishes. The man aptly nicknamed “Bulldozer” is gonna be shooting up the rankings with performances anything like the one we saw on Saturday.

Belal Muhammad puts it all together: I really like what Belal brings to a fight. This matchup with Takashi Sato had potential for plenty of excitement but Belal really showed up. He wins via rear naked choke in the third round pushing the Roufusport product to 16-3. It also garnered him his first POTN since his incredible fight with Alan Joubon back in 2016. I’d love to see Belal square off with a top 12 opponent.

Muslim Salikhov with another finish: The man known for bringing the violence does it again with his twelfth career KO. The man comes from the kickboxing world, where he’s gone 185-13-1 with 76 knockouts. What I’m trying to say is the man knows his way around hand to hand combat y’all. Much like other badasses that have made the move to MMA from kickboxing, he’s shown to be susceptible to the ground game. His two losses in the cage have come due to rear naked choke, with the most recent being in 2017. Still, the win moves Muslim to 2–1 in the octagon with both wins coming from vicious knockout punches.
