UFC 241 Reaction

UFC 241 took place over the weekend and my oh my what a night it turned out to be. We had some real doozies before we even got to the primetime rematch in the main event. LFG.

Stipe Miocic is the man again

What incredible residence for the Ohio native. He was losing on the cards and took some big shots en route to getting the finish. When Stipe started landing gigantic body shots in the fourth round, it felt like the tides may be turning. I say ‘may’ because DC is tougher than nails, y’all. Cormier, famously, took a Rumble Johnson punch that sent him across the cage only to see him bounce right back and go on to win via submission. Cormier took sooooooo many blasts to the body. I stop counting around 10, then looked at Haley to say “Stipe is gonna get the finish.” You could just feel the tide turn on those blows.

Sure enough, with less than a minute left in the round, Stipe pours it on after catching DC to reclaim his heavyweight crown. Miocic waited over a year for the rematch and he did what he said he would do. Once again, he’s the baddest man on the plant. Now, the question is do we get a third match?

What’s next for Cormier?

You gotta think the rubber match between Stipe/DC is the next move, right? I mean, that’s assuming Cormier is still wanting to fight. He’s great in the booth and on the mic, plus he’s starting to do more on ESPN with his edition of ‘Detail’ premiering this week. There were serious rumors swirling that had he won, Cormier could hang up the boots. Even in defeat, it sounded like that day could be much sooner than later. My gut just says the two warriors we saw in the rematch will want to settle this 1-1 series and the check that should come with that probably wouldn’t hurt matters.

The 209 is back on that bull shit!

How awesome was it to see Nate Diaz back in the cage?!?! After a three year sabbatical, Nate was back facing off a legit threat in Showtime Pettis.

Pettis was coming off a clean KO of Wonderboy Thompson (in Nashville no less) back in March, so there was some saying this could end with Diaz taking the loss. He said fuck all that, coming out like a Diaz just peppering shots on Pettis. It was a complete performance for Nate as he showed off on the feet as well as in the ground game. After a unanimous decision victory, he politely (for him especially) called out Jorge Masvidal. Jorge, famous for nearly beheading Ben Askren, was shown enjoying the callout/shoutout. It’s always an event with either of the Diaz brothers and this was no different even if this was a bit more chill than usual.

Paulo Costa vs. Yoel Romero

This won FOTN and rightfully so as these two tanks beat the holy hell out of each other. I picked Costa going in, but on nothing more than a feeling that the undefeated young gun was gonna bring the fucking noise. It was brought then sent right back as Yoel wouldn’t back down. Romero looked exhausted early on in the fight but the dude kept going. It was amazing to see. Take into account that each man landed heavier than heavy shots then you’ve really got to be in awe.

After 15 minutes, the fight went to decision with Costa getting the unanimous nod. He’s now 13-0 with this being his first decision victory, to go along with one submission victory and eleven knockouts. The 28 year old said he’d wait it out to face the winner of Whittaker/Adesanya, which takes place on October 6 and is for the UFC Middleweight Title.

Notes

  • Sodiq Yusuff and Khama Worthy both got impressive TKO victories. Worthy was awarded POTN along with Stipe after blasting Devonte Smith in a huge upset. The win moves “The Deathstar” to 15-6 though he is on a six-fight win streak.
  • Cory Sandhagen improved to 12-1 after a dominant performance over Raphael Assuncao. Sandhagen showed off across the board increasing his win streak to seven with back to back wins over names like Assuncao and John Lineker. Very excited to see who he gets matched up with next.
  • Drakkar Klose added another feather in his cap after winning a back and forth fight with a very game Christos Giagos. Klose now sits at 11-1-1 though wins over Lando Vannata and Bobby Green coming leading into this victory are impressive. With so many killers in the lightweight division it’s only a matter of time before Klose finds himself in a fight with a ton of eyes on it.
