When Did Murfreesboro Become the Latest It City in Tennessee?

Apparently, Murfreesboro….that’s right….Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is becoming the latest “it city” in the mid-state region.

I know, I’m just as shocked as you are to hear this news. As a long time native of Middle Tennessee, and a graduate of the Harvard of the South, Middle Tennessee State University, my memories of that town would make it anything but an “it city.”

Credit to that same Fox17 article I quoted yesterday:

Franklin was followed by Smyrna ($1,270), Hendersonville ($1,250), Nashville, and Murfreesboro ($1,120) rounding out the top ten. Murfreesboro has seen the fastest growth with 3.7% over the last 12 months according to the report.

Fastest growth in the last year? Man, I heard the guys on Midday 180 talkin’ somethin’ ’bout Murfreesboro being the new “it city” a couple of weeks ago, and I just don’t know when this happened.

That’s twice in the last little bit that I’m reading about the growth of the boro and how it’s where it’s at now!

When did this happen? And, more importantly, why?

The Murfreesboro I grew up with was boring as shit. There wasn’t anything to do except go to Stones River Mall. When they built the kid’s castle playground thing, that was like a revelation. Otherwise, that place was only useful for visiting my grandmother.

Then, I get to college and they build The Avenue – that was the only thing that could cure that random Tuesday boredom. You’d just get blackout drunk because there was nothing else to do. I mean, yeah – the whole college thing probably had something to do with it. But, it was a big commuter school back when I was there from 2004-08. People went home on the weekend.

Now, being an adult and realizing what that drive from Rutherford County into downtown Nashville is like on I-24, I definitely can’t understand why it’s becoming such an ‘it city.’

My God – I have barely reported any facts in this post of journalism. Only ranting. I apologize.
