Music Monday with Jon Darling’s adventurous instrumental album: High Forest

May has arrived, most of the country is freshly thawed, and we’ve begun to shed our mental cocoons from winter hibernation.  This is the time of year we enjoy the warming weather, while building the foundations for summer projects and adventures.

For the past several years, there has been one habit-turned-to-ritual which has allowed me to get into the right mindset for the warmer months, and that is listening to Jon Darling’s High Forest album every chance I get.

Mr. Darling shares his truly impressive and wide range of musical talent in this fully instrumental ensemble.  His ability to structure each song is much the same as a written tale.  You’ll find welcoming intros, intriguing build-ups alongside conflicts, and rewarding resolutions.

Who says lyrics make or break a song?  And who needs words to tell a story?

I’ve written (on paper and in mental notes) several of my own stories with the help of this album.  I can squeeze earbuds under my motorcycle helmet and ride for hours with these songs on repeat to help clear & organize my thoughts.

I also recommend this album if you are easily distracted by lyrics while working in an office environment.  There is more than enough depth in this album to still get the full effect that good music provides.

Enjoy!
