CAPTAIN MARVEL

Brandon Vick – 3 out of 5 stars

Brie Larson brings the heat in Marvel’s first female-led film where girl power is pumping on the highest level. Larson’s a perfect fit and doesn’t rely on the fancy pyrotechnics to make her excellent performance. Her and Samuel L. Jackson’s chemistry and comedy chops brighten up their scenes, while Ben Mendelsohn steals almost every one he’s in. And the awesome adorableness that’s been said about Goose is absolutely true.

Directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden have a few surprises up their sleeve along with some terrific throwbacks. There’s a lot to marvel at – visual thrills and humor flying all around – but it doesn’t break any new ground when it comes to origin stories. Less remarkable and more routine. It’s a MCU filler to get us to Endgame.

Stoney Keeley – 3 out of 5 stars

I’m a big time Marvel apologist. In fact, the running joke on the SoBros team is that I only go see movies in theaters if they’re Marvel movies. But, even I didn’t feel like this one was anything extraordinary. It’s a formula we’ve seen Marvel use before, and while it was effective in introducing you to the newest superhero in the MCU, I couldn’t but help but feel a little like I did after the first Captain America movie…

“Well, we had to do this so we can get to the big Avengers team-up…”

That said, there are a couple of pretty big twists that make for an interesting and unexpected dynamic. Larson was the perfect choice for Carol Danvers, but like Brandon said, Mendelsohn was the show-stealer. If I’m doing a quick character power rankings, Goose is at the top of the list.

If you’re expecting some big revelatory story about the future of the MCU, you’re going to be disappointed. This story stands on its own, but it does so well. A solid, sturdy foundation for the future of this character.
