Music Monday: Julien Baker

“Oh good, it’s Monday again!”…said no one ever.  Thankfully, the SoBros are here to freshen up your playlist and get you through to Friday! This week, we’re spotlighting an in-house favorite:  Julien Baker.

You might be asking yourself, “Why is she a SoBros favorite?”

Well, for one, she’s a Tennessee native.  Born and raised in Memphis, to be exact.

And two, she went to MTSU, our editor-in-chief’s Alma Mater.

And three…she’s an excellent performer.

I’ve had the opportunity to see Julien perform live a handful of times now, including here in Nashville at the coveted Ryman Auditorium.  If you get a chance to attend a show of hers, DO IT.  You will enjoy every second of her solo-act.

Her strong vocals easily fill any room, sending chills through the audience, while her guitar reverberates and strings together her set.

I recommend giving her debut album Sprained Ankle a thorough listen, especially if you’re looking for a moment of calm.  I keep several songs from this album on my night-time playlists to help wind down.

Baker has now joined forces with two other extremely talented musicians, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, and have combined their efforts to form a new group known as boygenius.  So be on the lookout for this trio in the near future.

My suggestions:

Must listen to:  Go Home

Noteworthy tunes:  Sprained Ankle,  Something, Sour Breath, Good News, Rejoice, Everything to Help You Sleep

Enjoy!
