Probably Safe for Alabama Fans to Go on and Start Looking to Football Season

As if getting our buttholes wallered out by Clemson in the National Championship (of football) wasn’t bad enough, odds are slim that this Alabama Crimson Tide team even makes the NCAA tournament. March Madness, SHMARCH SHMADNESS…..or, alternatively – March Sadness, am I right? Roll Tide.

The Tide has lost three in a row now, but it’s not just that they’re losing…it’s how they’re losing. 19-point loss to Mississippi State. 18-point loss to a Florida team that’s just 7-6 in the SEC. Then, there’s taking the nine-point loss to 11-14 (4-9 SEC) Texas A&M.

Yeah….that win over Kentucky is feeling like forever ago right about now.

Alabama now sits at No. 53 in the NET rankings used by the NCAA selection committee. Before losing three straight, it was No. 43. This is the first year of the NET, but in the past, power conference teams in the 40s were pretty much a lock to make the 68-team field.

There is less certainty in the 50s. There are outliers like USC last season who missed out at No. 33 in the RPI. The same Trojan program made it in at No. 67 in 2011.

The major outlets haven’t updated their forecasts since last night but at least 19 who contribute to bracketmatrix.com’s formula have. Of that group, 10 now have the Tide missing the field. Most have them in the first-four out.

Several of the nine who still have Alabama making the tournament project a 12-seed play-in game in Dayton. None had the Tide higher than an 11-seed and TeamRankings.com gives Avery Johnson’s team a 28 percent chance of making it — down 33 percent from a week earlier.

Yeah, you know what – I’ll be the one to officially blow the whistle on basketball season.

Tide fans, we’ve had our fun, and who were we kidding, anyway? Being basketball fans?!?! Laughable. If anything, this was the dose of reality we needed.

Now, could things turn around? Sure. The Tide still has a chance to upset a ranked LSU team. They could get quality wins over Auburn, Arkansas, or South Carolina. A strong performance in the SEC Tournament might just open the door again….but, I don’t know if I’m counting right now.
