ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

3 out of 5 stars

An incredible cast consisting of Oscar winners Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, and Mahershala Ali are no match for the visual grandeur of this popular manga movie. It’s a CGI-loaded sci-fi fantasy that kicks major ass when the action is going full speed on the screen. Though when it’s not, this story of self-discovery reveals itself as nothing more than bare-boned and empty-headed. With James Cameron being a producer and the driving force behind bringing this world to life, it’s no wonder we’re only seeing a piece of a sizable journey that will take more than one movie to tell. So the feeling of watching something incomplete definitely hangs over its head throughout.

But for what you get from director Robert Rodriguez – all is not lost. By tirelessly keeping the audience in amazement with its stirring special effects, high-voltage combat, and fantastical world-building, it’s an entertaining enough shiny spectacle. As our cyborg heroine, Rosa Salazar is the beating heart that is a must-have for a movie like this. Whatever small dose of emotion is squeezed out, it’s 100% from her as she wrestles with the memory of who or what she is.
