Adam Humphries Shouldn’t Get No Damn $8M From the Titans

Free agency will be here before you know it. The Tennessee Titans have plenty of needs, but it depends on how they want to address those needs that will dictate what they do come March. Personally, I’d like to see the team add a steady veteran at wide receiver in free agency as opposed to adding another young guy to the mix and expecting him to be the #2 right away. Adam Humphries could be just the fit!

Wow – that almost makes too much sense. Sounds nice and all, right?

*record scratch*

You guys are crazy if you think the Titans should give Humphries EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS per year.

Now, let me be clear – I’m not saying that Humphries isn’t worth $8M. He’s one of the best free agent wide receivers that’s going to hit the market, coming off of what was clearly the best season of his career (76 catches for 816 yards and five touchdowns). Someone is going to pay him that money. Someone with a lot of capital to throw at the position.

Are the Titans that team?

I don’t think so – north of $8M a year would put Humphries in the top 20 receivers in the NFL. I just don’t think that’s warranted. If the Titans were to spend that kind of money, it should be for someone who is going to be a #1. And, Corey Davis is still that guy.

I mean, this team needs some veteran depth at several positions –
linebacker, interior offensive line, defensive line, secondary, and yes, wide receiver. That free agent money’s going to need to be spread around. The Titans aren’t just one Adam Humphries away from a Super Bowl.

I don’t know if you’re going to see a big blockbuster free agent signing from the Titans this year. Something about this one just doesn’t sit right.

My recommendation would be Jamison Crowder. Might even put him at #1 whenever I finally sit down and do my Titans free agent wish list. But, I think he fills the need, brings the added dimension of returning kicks/punts to the table, and should be a little cheaper than Humphries.

Oh, it does feel good to be back, though. Let’s let the free agency talk begin.
