Football Accountability Post: Things I Got Wrong in 2018

From day one, I’ve always promised you guys will always get honest journalism from the SoBros Network brand. We’re transparent and are more than willing to eat crow when we’re wrong. Personally, I believe we need more of that in journalism. Plus, looking back at some of this stuff, it’s just downright hilarious….I mean, you can be wrong as long as you have a sense of humor about it, right?

Let’s take a look at some of my predictions from the preseason and very early on into 2018, and see just how wrong I was.

Super Bowl LIII: Saints defeat Chargers

Hey – this prediction was alive up until the divisional round! If I’m not mistaken, that’s the deepest my preseason Super Bowl prediction has ever gone. The Saints kept it going up until that heartbreaking loss in the NFC Championship. So, another year, another unsuccessful preseason pick. But, hey – at least it’s not as bad as picking Cardinals-Steelers in 2016 or my 2017 picks of Patriots over Cowboys.

Alabama def. Wisconsin for the 2018 National Championship

LOL. I was so close to nailing Alabama winning the title overall…but that was up until the game against Clemson actually started. This one is hilarious because of the Wisconsin pick. The Badgers were a HUGE disappointment, and your boy called them making it all the way to the Bay. Jonathan Taylor and Alex Hornibrook were coming back. The Big Ten West was supposed to be down. I thought all they’d have to do was beat Ohio State/Michigan in the Big Ten Championship and they’d be golden! So, so wrong.

Dwayne Haskins: Heisman Favorite

Look – I get it. Dwayne Haskins went to Purdue and lost any credibility he had in the Heisman race. But, through the first seven weeks of the season, I was willing to die on the hill that he had a better Heisman body of work than Tua Tagovailoa. I was wrong. H-O-W-E-V-E-R….you guys laughed in my face back then because I suggested anyone other than Tagovailoa could win the Heisman. I would like to point out that my larger point about the Alabama quarterback – that he wouldn’t get the opportunity to produce the gaudy stats that Heisman voters like. Is he the best quarterback in college football? Yes. But, that doesn’t mean he wins the Heisman – that was my larger point, and that, folks, proved to be right. I just had the wrong guy.

Watch out for the Bengals!

Yep. Here’s the thing. I don’t even remember why I thought the Cincinnati Bengals could be a sleeper team in the AFC. Maybe they would’ve been had they not endured a rash of injuries. I mean, they did get off to a pretty good start, and I did feel pretty smart for the prediction. But, boy – that thing fizzled out pretty quickly.

Clemson was overrated and not actually good

Oops. Hey, listen, though – the ACC was down this year. What happened to Miami, Florida State, or Virginia Tech?!?! The second best team in the conference was…..who? Syracuse? Syracuse?!?! They struggled against the ‘Cuse and they nearly lost to Texas A&M. Forgive me for thinking that schedule was gravy. I just held onto this one a little too stubbornly once Trevor Lawrence got healthy and kicked that Tigers offense into a new gear. I shouldn’t have lived in so much denial those last several games.

Falcons and Giants would be playoff teams

Yikes. Were the Giants the best 11-loss team in the NFL? Sure. Here’s the problem – you can’t make the playoffs if you lose 11 games. I thought the moves they made to bolster the offensive line and drafting Saquon Barkley would return them to playoff form. That didn’t happen. The Falcons were better, but not by much. After a 7-9 finish, Dan Quinn is going to be on the hottest of hot seats in 2019.

Missouri Tigers: SEC East Dark Horse

I don’t want to beat myself up too badly about this one. Some people were predicting the Tigers to finish in the basement of the SEC East, and to finish 8-4 was a bit of a surprise. But, they were never truly challengers to Georgia’s crown. Florida and Kentucky were both much more serious threats. But, I would like to point out that I wasn’t too far off with Drew Lock and company.

The Buffalo Bills would be the worst team in the NFL

Really pushed all my chips out on the table for this one. I hated the drafting of Josh Allen…giving away Tyrod Taylor and A.J. McCarron. Thought there was no way they were going to be competitive again with such an abysmal offense. But, their defense proved me wrong – kept them in games, and even won ’em a few more than I would’ve guessed. The worst team in the NFL was the Arizona Cardinals by a wide margin.

Feel free to share your bogus predictions so I don’t have to sit and writhe in embarrassment alone.
