Hot Take: Adam Gase, Actually Good?

Man, there’s a strong contingency of New York Jets fans that are up in arms about Gang Green signing former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase to helm the ship. Quite frankly, I don’t know what all the uproar is about. You have a young quarterback in Sam Darnold. Todd Bowles sure as hell wasn’t going to develop him. And, I think that’s probably what’s at the heart of this hire – you get someone who can work with your quarterback and you build out from there.

Gase’s Dolphins teams were competitive in two of his three seasons. Even his worst, in 2017, was 6-10. People act like that’s as bad as a 2-14 dumpster fire! Plus, lest we forget, Gase had to pluck Jay Cutler from the broadcast booth to play quarterback that year! In his first season with the Dolphins, Gase had ’em at 10-6 and in the playoffs! Before losing three straight to finish 2018, the Dolphins were 7-6 and right in the thick of the AFC playoff race. Now, those three losses were ugly – and maybe that’s why people are so apprehensive. But, come on – this is not the death nail for the Jets and Darnold.

Gase had virtually NO talent to work with in Miami. Their offensive line was bad – they were near the bottom of the league in passing. Danny Amendola was the leading receiver, and leading rusher was Frank Gore. OLD. The only bright spot, from a talent perspective, on that Dolphins roster was Kenyan Drake. But, the biggest thing holding Gase back might have been Ryan Tannehill. At this point in the dude’s career, you have to call a spade a spade. It’s time for Miami to start thinking about moving on from him. We all thought Tannehill was finally going to be the guy to break the Marino Curse, and he was given opportunity after opportunity to do so. It ain’t him, chief.

All of this, and Gase STILL had his Dolphins teams competitive.

Jets fans need to calm down and let this guy do his thing – that’s a competitive defense. They needed an offensive guy to come in and work his magic on Darnold. They have a couple of weapons, but they need to stockpile talent around the quarterback. Whether they do that through the draft or free agency remains to be seen. If the Jets do win the Le’Veon Bell sweepstakes, then watch out for this team in 2019. Boom – calling it.

Plus, Jets fans, you get the added bonus of all of Gase’s weird facial expressions:

Talk about peeking into a man’s soul. But, let’s not act like this is something new for Gase….

Anyway, Gase is going to do some good shit with Darnold and that Jets offense, assuming he can actually get the pieces around him to build a dynamic offense. My hot take of the year so far: Gase is actually good.
