WWE’s Top 5 Rivalries Of 2018: #3 – Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz

 In Pro Wrestling, WWE

The importance of a strong rivalry is immeasurable in the WWE. Sure, the matches and the characters and the pageantry are all each uniquely entertaining. But, the one thing that ties them all together is the story. What is a hero without a villain? What is drama without conflict? If the stakes are personal, doesn’t it just mean more? With that sentiment in mind, we’re taking a look at the some of the best rivalries in the WWE this year.

#3 – Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz

This was one of those wrestling programs that had roots, folks. Spread deeply throughout the last almost-decade of WWE programming. It all started, in earnest, way back in 2010 when The Miz was selected to be the mentor of Daniel Bryan. The two feuded over the United States Championship and that was that.

Well, after Bryan retired from wrestling in 2015, he became the GM of Smackdown after the brand split. In 2016, the feud was reignited when The Miz dropped an all-world promo on an episode of Talking Smack.

That was during the height of Miz’s resurrection of the Intercontinental Championship. It was during 2016 that he re-established himself as one of if not the best pure heel in the WWE. But, as time wore on, Miz kept teasing and taunting Bryan.

We never thought we’d actually get this program due to the WWE’s reluctance to clear Bryan to wrestle again. It was a pipe dream – nothing more than a tool to get Miz over on the blue brand.

Nearly two full years passed before something completely unexpected happened – Bryan was cleared to wrestle again, and made his triumphant return to the ring at WrestleMania 34, teaming with Shane McMahon to take on Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.

It gave them an opportunity to revisit the history of these two – that angle from NXT and the promo from Talking Smack. In the summer, they pulled the trigger, and we actually witnessed the feud we’d all been dying to see.

Was it really the blood feud we expected? Did it really reach a satisfying end? I don’t know that I’m willing to say that much. It took a weird turn when the program went from The Miz vs. Bryan to The Miz & Maryse vs. Bryan & Brie Bella. They had the weird match at Super Show-Down that lasted just over two minutes. But, the build to that SummerSlam match was awesome. Sometimes, we just anticipate things and build them up a little too much. But, the match itself was great, and the fact that we even got to see this at all is a veritable wrestling miracle. Every now and then, the stars do align just right.
