2018 Heisman Watch: Week 11

The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.

Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2018 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.

2018 Heisman Watch: Week 11

5. Will Grier, West Virginia QB – Another interception on the books for Grier, who’s had a couple of underwhelming games this year. That’s what’s kept him out of ‘serious’ contention for the Heisman. Nonetheless, he had another three-touchdown performance and passed for 343 as the Mountaineers trounced TCU 47-10.

4. Trayveon Williams, Texas A&M RB – If Williams could just be more consistent, he’d probably be higher on the list. But, he tends to disappear for weeks at a time. Still, he’s the 8th leading rusher in the FBS, and had his second 200+ yard rushing game on Saturday. Williams carried the ball 31 times for 228 yards and a touchdown against Ole Miss.

3. Quinnen Williams, Alabama DL – Might be kind of hard to get this one over, but holy shit. How can you deny the outright force that Williams has become? Six tackles and a sack against Mississippi State may not sound like much, but Williams has developed into one of the best defensive linemen in the entire country. He’s been a major factor in the Tide’s consecutive shutouts.

2. Gardner Minshew, Washington State QB – Minshew and these Cougars just keep showing up on a weekly basis. It’s crazy – three total touchdowns for the eighth time this season. On Saturday, Minshew went 35/58 (58!!!!!!!) for 335 and two touchdowns. Tack on 26 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown as Washington State rolled Colorado 31-7.

1. Jordan Love, Utah State QB – This Utah State team is something else. They’ve won nine straight after nearly upsetting Michigan State in the season opener, and they’re riding the wave of their dynamic quarterback. Love has quietly become the ninth highest-rated passer in the country. But, his game against San Jose State on Saturday was outright gaudy. Sure, it was San Jose State, but Love still threw for nearly 500 yards (491, to be exact), and FIVE touchdowns! Not to mention his rushing touchdown! It was his fourth game this season with at least five total touchdowns. The dude is out there posting ridiculous numbers – let’s show him some love.
