2018: The Rise of Brett Ison?

It’s easy to say 2018 has been the rise of “The Pitbull.” After already having a banner year at Southern Underground Pro, he capped it off by beating Marko Stunt for the Bonestorm Title on Sunday night. Adding “The Guy” to his list of wins that already includes Kerry Awful, Nick Iggy, Tripp Cassidy and A.J. Gray. Again, it would be easy to look at that list and say Brett Ison is on the rise.

The truth is he’s been on the rise for the last couple of years – y’all just weren’t paying attention.

It took him dismantling The Carnies for some to say he’s a bad motherfucker, but the guy was cracking skulls long before he nearly cut out the heart and soul of Tennessee wrestling. Just look at his body of work outside of SUP this year. He’s been stacking up titles and putting on underrated matches at Resolute Wrestling. He’s had the most entertaining match at every Bandit card he’s been on. He rolled up to PWF, and after winning a fatal five-way that included O’Shay Edwards, Cash Flo, Zodiak and Joshua Bishop, he left as the inaugural Great American Hoss Battle Champion. Hell, the night before SUP, he got a win over Matt Gilbert and former NXT/Sanity member Sawyer Fulton.

Take all of this into account and you see what 2018 has really been for Ison. Not a rise by any means, but a declaration simply stating “I belong.”

The cherry on top wasn’t the win over Stunt, but the post-match beat down of his only real ally in Edwards. The gauntlet was thrown down with a couple of elbows, followed by the primal scream of “THIS IS MY TERRITORY.” Ison made it clear he’s in this for himself and he’s more dangerous than ever.

He’s one of the best in the state of Tennessee. I know it, you know it, but the scary thing is now Brett Ison knows it. 2019 is fucked.
