SoBros Scary Stories: The Thud in the Night

As a part of our Halloween 2018 coverage, we’ve decided to open up a bit of our personal lives, and share some scary stories. These are full on eye witness accounts of spooky occurrences. So, get your popcorn ready. Feel free to pull these stories out around the campfire, too.

Spooky Season 2018 – it feels good to be back, folks. Truth be told, I wasn’t really planning on doing much Halloween talk this year after last year’s content plan really exhausted me (seriously, we did a lot in 2017). But, back at the beginning of October, I noticed a lot of those articles and stories we wrote a year ago started popping back up in the analytics again. In fact, the link I just dropped has over a thousand hits this month alone.

So, out of sheer panic, I threw together a content plan for Spooky Season 2018 and here we are. But, like I said, it feels good. Maybe we have something here.

Well, regardless, one of the things we wanted to resurrect for this year was our series of personal scary stories. These are real stories that I (or other SoBros in some cases) have witnessed and lived through. Brace yourselves – SoBros Scary Stories are BACK. LFG.

I’m working on a sort of comprehensive story about all of the weird little one-off stories I have that occurred at the house I grew up in. But, until then, you’ll just have to take my word for it. It was weird. I have a long list of stories that either I experienced or heard from my friends or parents.

And, yes – this is the ranch I speak of when I mention “SoBros HQ.” The SoBros team will be ecstatic to know that I’m building out an office/studio in a haunted house where bats and snakes do battle with humans and savage barn cats.

Anyway, back to the story.

I lived in this house from the time I was a baby until about 2012. The room I’m currently in the process of building into an office used to be my bedroom. It was a two-car garage before that, so it was plenty spacious. Plus, it had its own entry and exit – perfect for a rowdy group of teenagers to go out TPing houses at night without waking up the ‘rents. But, when I was alone, it could get kind of spooky in there. All of that space, and a door on the other side of which was nothing but hundreds of acres of woods.

Had a lot of weird stuff go down out there, but one night, I was having one of those restless, spooky nights alone. Kept hearing the walls creak, the leaves rustling outside, stuff like that. I finally dozed off around midnight, but was suddenly jolted awake by the loudest thud I have ever heard.

To this day, I can still feel the impact of that noise. It was as if someone took my air conditioning unit, climbed on top of the roof and threw it off onto my bedroom floor. I immediately got up, grabbed a flashlight, and walked around the house – not a single item was out of place. No signs of impact anywhere. I conclude that I probably just experienced it in my sleep and laid back down to go to bed.

Except I hear people talking.

I think, “must’ve left the volume up on the TV.” It was always so creepy out there that I very rarely slept in pitch dark. I grab the remote to turn the volume down and realize it’s already on mute. At this point, I’m pretty freaked out, but somehow, I manage to convince myself to fall asleep despite the weirdness around me.

The next morning, I go outside to look for signs of some sort of damage, and I see nothing. I ask my parents if they were up talking in the middle of the night, to which they replied with a hearty no and a laugh. I’m pretty weirded out…pretty confused…but I just go on about my day. After all is said and done, I just think that I must’ve dreamed the entire thing. That’s what I told myself, anyway.

Seems pretty innocuous, right? Couple of weird things, but nothing more. Well, some time later…it may have even been a year later…one of the good friends of this brand came over to the ranch and ended up crashing there with me. Woke up the next morning, and the friend was freaking out.

“The weirdest thing happened dude. I jolted awake in the middle of the night to the loudest noise – sounded and felt like an earthquake. Then, I heard all these people talking.”

Wait, what?

I ask, “did it sound like someone took that air conditioner out of the window and threw on the floor?”

“Yeah!”

I filled him in, and the two of us just sat there aghast at how we could both experience the exact same thing at different times. To this day, I have no explanation for it. No clue whatsoever, but I do still feel that sense of dread and confusion every time I think about that memory.
