East Tennessee Father-Son Feud Boils Over Into Chainsaw Lawnmower Fight – What?

I don’t really know how to explain it, but things tend to operate a bit….differently….out in East Tennessee compared to the mid-state. Don’t get me wrong –  we have plenty of crazies in and around Nashville. But, I’m hard pressed to remember the last time we had fathers and sons trying to murder each other with chainsaws and lawnmowers.

Courtesy of Fox 17:

A man who police say was run over with a lawn mower while trying to kill his son with a chain saw has had to have his leg amputated.

Wait, do what now?

I just…I’m going to need a minute to read that sentence again, folks.

I’m trying to imagine the execution of this quarrel. Like…was the man running around with a chainsaw??? How did the son have enough time to get on, start, and drive a lawnmower? Was the dad that slow? If that’s the case, why didn’t the son just run around until his dad tired out? I think that would’ve been my game plan. I mean, I would like to think that, “get the lawnmower and run his ass over with it” would be pretty low on my natural response list here. But, hey – like they say, you never really know what you’d do in a given situation until you’re in it!

The bottom line is that I’m really having trouble processing what happened here.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports that a warrant for 76-year-old Douglas Ferguson couldn’t be served until Tuesday because of the severity of his injuries.

According to a Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office release, officers called to a home June 28 found Ferguson bleeding from his leg and head. A preliminary investigation indicated he had tried to attack his son with a running chain saw while he son mowed the yard.

Detectives say the father and son had an ongoing feud.

Ah, that’s what it is – he was mowing the yard, and dad decided to get the chainsaw and end his life. Makes total sense now.

But, ongoing feud?!?! That’s what we call a decent rivalry in pro wrestling….that’s Titans-Jags in the NFL. I would think a lawnmower chainsaw fight would warrant stronger verbage here, but what do we use? Blood feud? Death fight? I don’t know…but this is crazy.

Ferguson is charged with attempted second-degree murder and violating probation. It’s unclear whether he has a lawyer to comment on his behalf.

Yep – I’d say you can’t attempt murder while you’re on probation. That seems like an egregious mistake, but then again, I’m no legal expert. What can we learn from this story? That’s the ultimate goal of what we do here – teach – after all. Well, folks – I think it’s simple: don’t mow the lawn if you’re dad wants to kill you and has access to a chainsaw.

East Tennessee, man.
