I Gotta See That: Most Anticipated Films of 2018 (or What’s Left of It)

We’ve only got a couple of movie months left in 2018 so I figured I’d give y’all the lowdown on the films I’m still waiting on.

Widows [Nov. 16]- Critically acclaimed director Steve McQueen is back with his first film since 12 Years a Slave and boy is it a humdinger. The film is about the widows of four armed robbers having to pull off a heist of their own after their husbands are killed. The cast is stacked with Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Liam Neeson, Jon Bernthal and Robert freaking Duvall leading the way. Look out for Brian Tyree Henry and Daniel Kaluuya to steal some scenes with this talented lot as the vicious Manning brothers.

First Man [Oct. 12]- I mean it’s Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong…what more do you need? In all seriousness, the first trailer of this that released may be my favorite trailer of the year. It came across like something out of the horror/thriller section more than a biopic drama about Apollo 11. Director Damien Chazelle is coming off the craziness of La La Land and it doesn’t look like things will be calming down anytime soon with this looking to be a sure fire hit.

Halloween [Oct. 9]- I need to say right away that I absolutely love John Carpenter’s Halloween. So the idea of a direct sequel directed by David Gordon Green, co-written by Danny McBride and starring the original scream queen herself Jamie Lee Curtis has had me on the hype train from day one. I rarely make trips to the theater on opening weekend (too many talkers/texters for my liking), but I’m going to make an exception here.

Destroyer [Dec. 25]- Basically, Nicole Kidman is a cop battling inner demons when a past enemy comes back into her life. This one seems to be super under the radar right now, but it won’t be come December. At the helm is Karyn Kusama, probably best known for Jennifer’s Body, but 2015’s The Invitation is what has me pumped for Destroyer.

Creed II [Nov. 21]- IT’S ROCKY VIII. LFG.

Mid90s [Oct. 19]- I’m pretty pumped up for a movie written/directed by Jonah Hill y’all. The film is about a kid hanging out with a group of older skateboarders in the…wait for it…mid-90s. I’m a sucker for a coming of age tale, let alone one set in an era I grew up in. Plus, I’ve gotta see the Big Brother crew out in support for this one.

Bad Times At The El Royale [Oct. 12]- Drew Goddard is directing Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm and fucking Thor!!!!! I have no clue what this one is about, but I’m completely here for it.

Roma [Dec. 14]- Alfonso Cuaron with this semi-autobiographical tale about a middle-class family in Mexico City during the 1970s. At this point, anything Cuaron puts out will be on my watch list, but something as personal as this story really has me intrigued.

A Star is Born [Oct. 5]- We all know the tale, and that Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga are gonna crush it, but can we just talk about this supporting cast for a minute? Sam Elliot, Dave Chappelle and Andrew Dice Clay are all in this movie in important roles. How fucking cool is that? Now we just need one of these fellas to get a best supporting actor nomination and life will be set.

Venom [Oct. 5] I loved Venom as a kid and Tom Hardy is the man. Those are the only two reasons I’m interested as the trailers haven’t done much for me nor does the behind the scenes team. Between director Ruben Fleischer and the writing team on the screenplay, I just don’t have a great feeling about this buuuuuut it’s Tom Hardy.
