This Turtle Broke His Shell and Got a Lego Wheelchair

I don’t know the first thing about offering medical services to turtles. Let’s just get that out of the way first. But, what I am is a journalist…and when I see a story about a little turtle getting a Lego wheelchair to help remedy his busted ass shell, that’s just heartwarming feel good stuff. I had to share it with the SoBros faithful.

An injured turtle is riding in style thanks to zoo keepers at The Maryland Zoo.

The wild eastern box turtle has been outfitted with a wheelchair made of Lego bricks.

A zoo employee found the injured turtle in Druid Hill Park in Baltimore, Maryland, in July.

“He had multiple fractures on his plastron, the bottom part of his shell,” said Dr. Ellen Bronson, senior director of animal health, conservation, and research at the zoo.

Man, I’ve had a lot of thoughts in my life. But, I’ve never faced the conundrum of wondering what to do with a turtle who broke the bottom of its shell. That just sounds like a layered problem that is inherently difficult to figure out. What do you?

Do you just lay it on its back for eight months?

Also, listen – I said this was a feel good story, but we need to ask an important question. This story doesn’t address how this turtle fractured his shell into multiple pieces. We need to hold the person who was supposed to be watching the turtles accountable. How did this injury happen? Should we close down this zoo?

Zoos pay people to strictly sit there and watch the turtles, right?

The turtle underwent surgery to fix its fractured shell. The zoo’s veterinary team used metal bone plates, sewing clasps and surgical wire to hold pieces of the turtle’s fractured shell together.

Zoo officials say the turtle took off as soon as he was outfitted with the miniature design.

“He never even hesitated,” said Fraess. “He took off and has been doing great. Turtles are really good at healing as long as the shell remains stable.”

This sounds like one hell of an episode of General Hospital. But, nonetheless, I am happy to hear that the Six Million Dollar Turtle is doing fine and enjoying his new wheelchair.

The big takeaway is that there’s nothing that Legos can’t do.

They really are useful for every occasion.
