2018 SEC Power Rankings: Week 4

Man, college football is just the best. How did you spend your Week 4? Personally, I watched a live stream of some random guy’s TV so that I could see Army/Oklahoma in overtime. I also screamed at my phone a lot while watching Oklahoma steal a win.

After four weeks, the SEC is starting to really sort itself out. The gap between the good, the bad, the great, and the ugly is really starting to map out. This is great news if you’re in the top tier of the SEC. It’s pretty rough, however, for the middle of the road and ugly teams this season. Was your team great or ugly? Let’s have a look together, shall we? On to the rankings!

1. Alabama – Yeah, the Crimson Tide is good. Really good. This offense lead by Tua Tagovailoa is easily the most potent Tide offense under Nick Saban. After handling Texas A&M without much a of scare, Alabama should cruise until they meet LSU in November. They’ll dismantle LU-Lafayette this weekend.

2. Georgia – It wasn’t the prettiest game Georgia has ever played, but it didn’t need to be either. There’s a lot to be said about a team that can sleepwalk to a win on the road. Kirby Smart still has plenty of time to get his team playing their best ball before hitting a challenge. They won’t find one when they host Tennessee this weekend.

3. LSU – The Tigers keep rolling along undefeated. Coach O really leans on the defense and special teams, because I don’t believe any of us are sold on the offense. The win over Louisiana Tech wasn’t their best showing, but after taking down two top 10 teams to start the season, they were due a let down. They host Ole Miss this weekend.

4. Kentucky – Ok, I see you Wildcats. I said last week that if Kentucky could upset Mississippi State then I’d officially buy in. Well you can have my wallet. I’m in. Kentucky didn’t just upset the Bulldogs; they rolled right over them. Benny Snell ran all over the field Saturday night, and should be in the SEC MVP conversation. I’m ready for the Kentucky/South Carolina game this weekend.

5. Auburn – Do I think Auburn is better than Kentucky? Probably, but I had to give an edge to the rolling Wildcats. The Tigers handily defeated Arkansas, but still isn’t clicking on offense like we all thought they would. Stidham is more than capable as a QB, but doesn’t seem to have a steady running back to share the load. This is still a quality team that has a few kinks to work out. That should be fairly easy against Southern Miss.

6. Texas A&M – The Aggies come off a pretty lopsided loss, but it was an expected one against the Tide. For perspective, A&M has 2 losses: Clemson and Alabama. Those aren’t exactly terrible losses. Jimbo Fisher still has the Aggies moving in the right direction but shouldn’t be expected to take down the big dogs yet. (Side note: I love Fisher calling a time out with one second left.) They’ll get back on track against Arkansas this weekend.

7. South Carolina – The Gamecocks notched a solid win after an off week from the hurricane. Jake Bentley slashed a stout Vanderbilt defense and looked like a veteran starter. They’re not out of the hunt for the East just yet, but they’ll need some help. They’ll also need to take down the red hot Wildcats this weekend.

8. Mississippi State – Ouch. I don’t think anyone saw this one coming. Mississippi State should have steam rolled Kentucky, but couldn’t string anything together. That potent offense vanished and made Joe Moorhead look exactly like a new head coach. They’ll have to shift their focus to the return of Dan Mullen this weekend.

9. Florida – The Gators are a little tough to figure out. The loss to Kentucky doesn’t look so bad now, but the win over Tennessee isn’t very impressive. I still don’t think Feleipe Franks is a great QB. More than likely Mullen is making him look better. Either way, Mullen and the Gators are walking into a hostile environment this weekend.

10. Missouri – The Tigers put up a good showing against the Georgia Bulldogs, but I don’t believe in moral victories. Drew Lock continues to be the star of the show but lacks any kind of support on defense. They head into a bye week where they need to work on not turning the ball over.

11. Ole Miss – You know what you’re getting with Ole Miss. Basically the Missouri of the West. They can fling the ball with reckless abandon while not being able to stop a middle school team from scoring. That doesn’t bode well heading into Death Valley at night.

12. Vanderbilt – It never fails. I say something good about Vanderbilt and they make me regret it the next week. After almost leaving South Bend with a win, the Commodores get their doors blown off by South Carolina. And here I thought they could make a little noise this year. Same old song and dance. Same old Vandy. They host TSU this weekend.

13. Tennessee – That was tough to watch. Six turnovers? If it wasn’t for Arkansas, UT would be dead last.

14. Arkansas – Just get comfy. You aren’t going anywhere.
