Titans at Jaguars: Preview

Jacksonville opened this game as 6.5-point favorites. The over-under was set at 39.5. As of Thur. Sep. 20, many services were waiting on word about Marcus Mariota before offering a final line. Expected conditions are 86F with 7MPH winds and partly cloudy.

Quite possibly the ugliest DFS game on this slate. Two run-heavy opponents that know each other well. The Titans have won four of the last five games in this series. Last year was a Titans sweep. In 2017, Mariota and Blaine Gabbert combined to give Jacksonville three of their six regular-season losses.

One player who could pose a surprising threat is Dede Westbrook. Statistically, Titans cornerback Malcolm Butler has been one of the weakest defenders. He was burned deep in both of their first two games: Kenny Stills (Dolphins) and Will Fuller (Texans). Butler can struggle defending speedy wide receivers. While Pro Football Focus (PFF) projects Butler to cover the slower Keelan Cole, Westbrook spends a fair amount of time as the LWR. That would match him up with Butler, who could struggle defending his 4.34 40-yard dash speed. Last week, Westbrook caught a 61-yard touchdown.

My ultimate DFS weakness would probably revolve around running back committees. That said, if you must choose between Derrick Henry or Dion Lewis, Henry appears like the preferable option. In 2017, Henry had two busy days against Jacksonville. His first matchup included 14 carries for 92 yards with a touchdown. The Week 17 game included 28 carries for 51 yards and a 66-yard touchdown reception. My biggest concern is that this new coaching regime appears to prefer Lewis. At $4400, you can play Henry. Don’t sell your soul to him.

Paying $4000 for Jaguars defense is unnecessary. Spend your money elsewhere. If you’re into playing road defenses, Titans $2300 D/ST is meh. I’m more about playing home defenses. They’re better equipped to get those defensive scores that can boost your fantasy point totals. Even if you pay up for defense, I’d rather pay $4300 for Vikings defense against Buffalo’s rookie gunslinger Josh Allen. Much greater potential for touchdowns and turnovers. Not $4000 for a tightly contested grudge match with tons of carries from each team.

There’s not much else to say. Don’t play quarterbacks in the lowest over/under games. Blake Bortles isn’t tossing another four touchdowns. Tennessee has a solid run defense that should limit Leonard Fournette and T.J. Yeldon. Titans vs Jaguars contests are about as old school as one will find. Lots of trench warfare. Not the type of football that’s fantasy compatible.

Always check the injury report before each contest.
