Captain Marvel Looks Like a BOSS in the First Trailer Release

Marvel dropped the first Captain Marvel trailer this morning, and it is hot ass fire. In case you missed it, scope it out below:

Okay….okay….let’s breathe for a minute. There’s a lot to get to.

Marvel continues to impress me with their approach to telling origin stories. You get through characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor pretty easily. But, selling movie-goers on Marvel’s lesser known properties? That’s where things get dicey, but they’ve nailed it so far. They made Guardians of the Galaxy a veritable comedy. Doctor Strange introduced us to the realm of sorcery. Black Panther was all about the atmospheric visual of Wakanda. They made Peter Parker a high school student. So on and so forth. Instead of the same old tired hero origin stories, they’re giving each film and each character something different.

It looks like they’re going to nail it again.

For those who don’t know, Captain Marvel is set in the 90s, during the epic Kree-Skrull war. Carol Danvers is obviously struggling to remember her time on Earth. So, it’s almost like we might be watching this movie work backwards. Instead of a traditional story trajectory, it looks like we’re going to be watching Captain Marvel work it out through flashbacks and memories. Also, love the shout out to Blockbuster Video, R.I.P..

Nick Fury has two eyes, Agent Coulson is young, and the world seems upside down. We don’t get a look at Jude Law in the trailer, though he plays the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, in the film. Also not pictured is Lee Pace, who is reprising his role as Ronan the Accuser, though presumably less dead since this movie is taking place in the 90s.

But, MY GOD THE SKRULLS! It’s pretty evident that The Skrulls are going to be the next big bad in the MCU once Thanos is presumably defeated in Avengers 4. I love the look they’ve given ’em, and am stoked that Ben Mendelsohn was brought on to play Thalos (the leader of The Skrulls).

Kevin Feige has come out and said that Captain Marvel is going to be the most powerful superhero in the MCU. She’s basically the Marvel version of Superman, even though Marvel has that in Thor (I make no apologies for my love of the God of Thunder, who is unquestionably the most powerful superhero in existence). So, yeah! This is an important movie! Captain Marvel is going to show us just how important Danvers will be in taking down the Mad Titan next spring. So, not only does this movie look awesome. It’s also going to help set up the next installment of the Avengers.

What a rollercoaster of emotion this morning.
