2018 SEC Power Rankings: Week 1

Hey guys!

I hope all of you had an excellent opening weekend of college football. Personally, I watched football coverage for 18 straight hours. It was glorious.

Now, admittedly, we were a little shorthanded on competitive games for the weekend. Outside of 2-3 games, it was essentially blowout after blowout. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to learn much about your team when they destroy an FCS team by 50 points. Either way, let’s see if there’s anything to take away from cupcake weekend. On to the rankings!

1. Alabama – Well, now we know Tua is the guy and boy did he look the part. Alabama scored on five of their first six possessions with a deadly passing attack. Yes, you read that correctly. Alabama can now officially throw the ball all over the field. The secondary looked a little green at times, but Deionte Thompson is a stud that can pull everything together. This could be a scary team. They host Arkansas State this weekend.

2. Georgia – The Bulldogs destroyed Austin Peay, as predicted. It was tough to learn much from this one since we already know that Georgia is a solid team. A little bit of a slow start shouldn’t worry Georgia fans, but they should be happy getting to see Justin Fields show off a little. The first real test will be heading to South Carolina.

3. Auburn – One of the few SEC teams that played a solid opponent, the Tigers notched a major top 10 win to start the season. That win could come in handy during arguments for the playoff. The Auburn defense stole the show, essentially shutting down the formidable Washington offense. The offense was good but didn’t showcase anything spectacular. Now they get an easy home opener against Alabama State.

4. LSU – I’ll be totally honest here. I watched this entire game, and I still have no idea if LSU was that good or Miami was that bad. Either way, the Tigers ended the weekend with a quality top 10 win right out of the gate. Transfer QB Joe Burrow had a solid game without really stealing the show. The defense is what will make LSU a contender for the SEC this season. It’s also worth mentioning that Coach O’s seat has probably cooled for the time being. They have their home opener against Southeastern Louisiana.

5. Mississippi State – New coach Joe Moorhead started his head coaching career with a win. Granted, it was against Stephen F. Austin, but it’s a start. The Bulldogs also played without Nick Fitzgerald while managing to hang up 63 points. They get a nice little crossover game with Kansas State this weekend.

6. Ole Miss – Another team that actually earned a quality win, the Landshark Rebels dominated Texas Tech. The nWo (The Nasty Wide Outs, also my favorite thing right now) really lived up to the hype. Jordan Ta’amu had a solid day while the defense had Tech reeling. Maybe the demise of Ole Miss has been greatly exaggerated. They host Southern Illinois this weekend.

7. South Carolina – I’m having an issue ranking a lot of teams that beat cupcakes this weekend. South Carolina gets an edge for having a solid offensive attack, balancing the air and the ground. With everyone healthy (including Deebo Samuel) the Gamecocks didn’t need to show too much of the playbook to win. That’ll be a different case for Jake Bentley and company this weekend when they host Georgia.

8. Texas A&M – The Aggies started with an inferior opponent on Thursday. They hung up over 700 yards of offense, with Trayveon Williams being the real highlight of the game. Scoring three touchdowns with over 200 yards of offense is a solid game, regardless of opponent. Now, if he can do that against Clemson this weekend…..

9. Florida – The Gators land at #9, but I’m not entirely sure why. They’re also #25 in the AP Poll which baffles me even more. They dominated Charleston Southern, but didn’t show anything spectacular. The largest plot line was Florida starting with several players suspended (try not too look too surprised by that.) Felipe Franks looked like a fine QB but was never really tested. Maybe Kentucky can give them a game this weekend.

10. Missouri – Drew Lock continues to make it look easy. Of course, this weekend, it was easy for the Tigers against UT-Martin (No offense to any UT-Martin alumnus reading this.) Not much to learn from this one, but Mizzou lands at #10 because Derek Dooley didn’t ride to glory on a rascal scooter. They host Wyoming this weekend.

11. Vanderbilt – How about the Dores pummeling MTSU? Holding the MTSU offense in check might not seem like much, but is a solid feat considering how much talent Vandy had to replace. I’m still not overly sold, but Derek Mason needs to keep this defense rolling. They host Nevada this weekend.

12. Arkansas – It looks like the Razorbacks and Chad Morris have found their QB1 in Tye Storey. He looked to be a solid passer, showing good chemistry with the receiving corps. The run game leaves a little to be desired, but it’s early yet. They head to Colorado State this weekend.

13. Kentucky – The Wildcats struggled to put away Central Michigan. The passing game was atrocious and Kentucky couldn’t keep possession of the ball. Fortunately for the Wildcats, Benny Snell was there to carry the team to a win. It could be a long day down in Florida.

14. Tennessee – You’re the only team that lost this weekend. You want me to say something nice about the Vols, but I’m not going to, SO QUIT ASKING.
