Movie Review Rewind: Marmaduke (2010)

Marmaduke is an easy movie to review. Kids will love it and parents will have to sit through it. This is not one of those movies that are targeted for children and adults. Not at all. This is completely for kids. Younger kids. That becomes pretty clear as soon as you see Marmaduke talking into the camera.

Marmaduke is based on a popular comic strip which is now over 50 years old. The movie focuses on a life change for Marmaduke and his family. They leave Kansas for California, and everyone is trying to adjust and fit in. The father (Lee Pace) is so focused on his work, he ends up ignoring his family. And Marmaduke gets in to all kinds of trouble starting with the dog park (which is like high school for dogs) and with his family.

I understand why Marmaduke is a Great Dane. They are big dogs that wreak havoc and that is what happens in this movie. But he is also a big dog with a big heart and it does not hurt having Owen Wilson voicing him. There is actually quite a bit of talent lending their voices including George Lopez, Emma Stone, Kiefer Sutherland, and Steve Coogan, but it does not really do anything to elevate the story. You probably can’t even tell which dogs they voiced. Well most of them.

Marmaduke will be enjoyed by kids mostly. However, for those who own a pet (specifically dog lovers), you will be entertained just because there are animals in the movie. And if you are one of these people, then you are probably already sold on this movie. You know what to expect going in which lowers the chances of you being disappointed by the end. It is a dog that talks, dances and farts. Enough said.
