Nothing Has Ever United the SoBros Team Like This MoviePass Fiasco

I see, on average, maybe…..three….movies a year in theaters. Just not a movie guy. It’s not that I don’t enjoy them – I just overthink them. I see a good movie and it makes me want to write. Then, I can’t sleep at night because I’m thinking, “I should be jotting all of these ideas down.” It’s very hard for a movie to take me out of my own brain. So, with that in mind, it might surprise you to read that I was fired the fuck up when my teammates were inconvenienced thanks to this MoviePass bullshit.

Courtesy of USA Today:

MoviePass hasn’t had a great couple of weeks.

Late last week, the ticketing service experienced a temporary outage because it ran out of cash, followed by another outage Monday. It raised prices and limited movie selection on Tuesday, and its parent company’s stock, Helios and Matheson Analytics (HMNY), is  currently valued at 13 cents per share despite a reverse stock split the previous week.

I have never seen this SoBros team together so quickly and so wholeheartedly as I did when MoviePass’ troubles started multiplying.

I mean, right away, Poppa Bear is taking “Nature Boy” Brandon Vick in the SoBros Slack’s #happyhour channel, like, “you see this shit, Nature Boy?”

And, Nature Boy is all, “I did, ain’t that some buuuuuuuushit?!?!”

Next thing you know, Smokey is in there analyzing MoviePass’ business model, and we’re all chiming in like, “this is so dumb.”

Just one of those rare moments in time when a large group of people come together in complete unity and harmony to pull off something much bigger and much greater than themselves.

I went back and dug up some of the criticism:

Poppa Bear: “Apparently, to stay in business, they are raising the price to $15 and blacking out major movies for the first 2 weeks, and still doing surge pricing on the weekend.”

Smokey: “Seems really dumb. Raise that shit to $25 and people would still buy it.”

Brandon Vick: “But the way prices are at movies. They could go to at least $20 and match AMC and not use Peak pricing. Some can wait 2 weeks for movies.”

Even Rooster, Herbie Brooks, and Cadbury Pringlebatch were chiming on the discussion, talking about what a bunch of dumb fucks MoviePass are being. But, since we don’t pay Slack to keep track of our archives, I can’t find them.

Still, this is an incredibly heartwarming story of the emotional high associated with being part of a team. It doesn’t matter that there’s no real aim or goal to our MoviePass bitching. But, what matters is that we’re family. Seeing this all unfold occasionally over the course of the last month has brought numerous tears to my eyes.

Anyway, hope this has been a useful way for you to spend your time. And, I really hope MoviePass gets its shit together.
