The Oscars Want To Be A Cool Kid

The Academy (the people who give out the most prestigious awards in film) are making some drastic changes. A couple of those involve making the Oscars telecast only three hours long, and while the exact categories haven’t been decided, some of the awards will actually be given out during commercial breaks. More so, the telecast is being moved up to February 9th starting in 2020, the earliest it’s ever been.

All of these changes are brewing from their lackluster ratings to say the least, and from the growing, more diverse members that are speaking up and changing with the times. With that said, the biggest, and somewhat shocking, announcement is the Academy’s Board of Governors have ruled to create a brand new category for mainstream movies we’ve all probably at least heard of. Via The Wrap, here’s what the Academy had to say about it in their e-mail today to all of their members:

2. New award category

We will create a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film. Eligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming.

Well I’ll be damned! You’re telling me that Mission:Impossible – Fallout could be an Oscar winner?! Black Panther?! A Quiet Place?! Make it be so!

Now as you can read— what qualifications are involved to be nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film are unknown. Does the movie get the award? It sounds like another Best Director-esque award if you ask me. We’ll have to wait and see, of course. But, the fact that the Oscars are attempting to loosen up a bit is a miracle. And this is coming from a dude who has actually seen most of the Oscar nominees in years past.

Who says they can’t recognize Teen Titans Go! To The Movies and still be classy?!

With this mind-blowing announcement, the first recipient of this new award should be given to The Dark Knight prontoThe Academy knows it’s the right thing to do….a decade later…
