No Way I’m Ranking Tua Tagovailoa a Top 3 College Quarterback Yet

I absolutely love what Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa did in the National Championship game against Georgia. It certainly looks like he’s going to be the franchise guy for Nick Saban’s squad. By all accounts, this kid has Heisman potential, and could become the greatest quarterback in Alabama’s history. But, by that same token, I’m not sure I’m expecting all of that to come in 2018.

He’s basically played one half of a college football game, but who cares? He showed why he was one of the nation’s top recruits. With Alabama’s study surrounding cast on the offensive line and at skill positions, Tagovailoa will probably exceed the high expectations.

He’s a dual-threat quarterback, who managed to help Alabama nab a comeback win in the national championship game by replacing starter Jalen Hurts at halftime. Saban surely had a sense that Tagovailoa could handle the huge moment, and threw him into the mix on the biggest stage, where he went 14 of 24 for 166 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in the overtime win.

Expect more of the same from Tagovailoa next season.

Yeah, that’s a ‘no’ from me dog.

How enamored can we really be after only seeing a half of football from the kid? He looked good against Georgia. If not for his effort, I don’t think Alabama is celebrating a National Championship. Tagovailoa looked cool, calm, and collected in the most stressful situation you could possibly imagine in the context of football.

And, listen – this is coming from an unapologetic Tide fan. But, the hype is just absolutely ridiculous right now.

I simply don’t buy in yet. In fact, I think it’s a bit of a discussion to put him in the top three quarterbacks in the SEC alone. Drew Lock, Jake Fromm, Jarrett Stidham, Jake Bentley, Nick Fitzgerald, and Jordan Ta’amu might have something to say about that. Hell, there’s a dude on Tagovailoa’s own team that may have something to say about it: Jalen Hurts. He’s pretty good in his own right.

So, that’s a debate in and of itself, much less the entire nation in a year when the quarterback play looks to be pretty damn good. You have guys across the entire country, from McKenzie Milton at UCF to Jake Browning at Washington, that will be jockeying for Heisman positioning. It’s unreal to me that someone would put Tagovailoa in the same company as proven guys like Will Grier and Trace McSorley after one half of football.

Now, does he have the talent to become the best quarterback in the nation? Sure – I just think it’s a little unrealistic to think it’s going to happen so quickly and so dramatically when our sample size is rather small.

So, cool it.
