The Odds for the First NFL Coach to Be Fired Are Out – Who Ya Got?

NFL coaches are fired and hired every single season. But, hey – that’s life in the league. You only get so many losses before even the most patient of owners cans your ass. They ain’t all the Steelers, folks. Summer futures season is in full swing, and some sports books have already laid out their odds for which NFL coach is going to be fired first.

This isn’t unlike the office pool when you bring in a new person and everyone makes their bets on how long they’ll last. Or, “how long until so-and-so is fired?” Brutal…but yet, here we are. Bettin’ on people to lose their jobs.

A couple of interesting options in here. I don’t think anyone’s surprised to see Hue Jackson as the favorite. The Browns were reportedly done with him late in the 2017 season, then he ended up retaining his job. Plus, the Browns have just been putrid under Jackson. That said, the Browns have stockpiled so much talent that I can’t possibly fathom being the worst team in the league yet again.

Honestly, I’m a little surprised that Gase is second on the list here. The Dolphins are only a season removed from the playoffs and while last year was definitely a step back, don’t think they’re too far off from competing again.

So, I don’t like either of those guys for this bet. If I were a betting man, I think I’d be looking long at Marvin Lewis sitting there at +1000. Lewis took the Bengals to the playoffs for what felt like 20 years straight and could never get them over the hump – they were gettin’ tired of his ass to begin with. But, then, they go and bottom out in 2017. He was another guy who was supposedly out, only to come back for another year. I don’t think the Bengals are going to be very good, so I think it’s bye bye for Lewis.

If you’re looking for a sleeper pick, I actually like Jay Gruden at +1200. The NFC East is going to be tough, and I don’t know that the Redskins take the next step. Gruden’s name was another floating around as a potential replacement in 2017.

Finally, if you’re going to take a swing on some long odds, take Jason Garrett at +2500. Jerry Jones patience has to run out at some point, right???
