EVIL GENIUS

A pizza delivery guy with a bomb around his neck walks in to a bank and robs it. Already sounds crazy enough to be true. But, once the bomb goes off, a shocking, unnerving murder mystery pours out in Eerie, PA in 2003. Co-directors Trey Borzillieri and Barbara Schroeder dig through the clutter and confusion to unmask a group of masterful manipulators and tear down their intricate web of lies in this weighty whodunit.

All of your questions aren’t answered and looking for the mastermind is not the only piece of it. The friction and lack of communication between state and federal governments that kept this case open well past a decade after it occurred is a little insane itself. Even so, as motivations become more clear and betrayals happen in a blink of an eye, it’s Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong who you won’t soon forget.

CARGO

Martin Freeman is fantastic as a father who is running out of time in directors Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling’s more personal, character-driven story that this genre usually doesn’t make time for. Regrettably, the thrills tend to be pretty lifeless in this zombie movie where most of the zombies are left out in the Australian backdrop. Its efforts aren’t as effective and far from a reinvention as it succumbs to the same stereotypical infection as all the others who wish to improve on the living dead.

MY NEXT GUEST NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION

WITH DAVID LETTERMAN: Season 1

We all knew the iconic Late Show host couldn’t stay gone for long. David Letterman doesn’t have to do a damn thing, but he seems forever fascinated with people. In his new Netflix show, the promotional bullshit is cut out and what’s left is simply two people having a conversation. Only one of them has a long, luxurious beard to make a lot of us super jealous. His guests include George Clooney, Tina Fey, Malala Yousafzai, Jay-Z, Howard Stern and President Obama—all well known but from all different walks of life.

You can see it in each of them, the comfort they feel being in an intimate setting sitting on a bare stage across from a guy who makes you feel more than welcomed. Letterman also takes the cameras outside with segments that share some relevance with each guest, making each of the six hour-long episodes a little more personal. More so, along with his dry wit that we have cherished for over two decades, he’s not afraid to reveal his own concerns or ignorance on any topic. He’s learning right in front of our eyes. You gotta love Letterman for that.

IBIZA

A loose and lewd comedy where once again women want to run wild in the name of girl power. Gillian Jacobs gets the chance to show what she’s got, and she doesn’t disappoint. Though it appears it was more fun filming than watching. There are some funny moments when a business trip to Barcelona becomes a 24/7 rager, but there are also quite a few lame ones to accompany them. Vanessa Bayer and Phoebe Robinson are solid sidekicks for Jacobs, and this trio deserves a redo. If there’s one thing this underwhelming shindig shows us—it’s that they have a lot more to offer.

Steve Martin and Martin Short:

An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life

Two wild and crazy guys (and best buds) who just happen to be comedic geniuses get together for a pretty funny variety show. Steve Martin and Martin Short bounce jokes off of each other, along with each of them displaying their own unique talents. Short does a little song and dance, and Jiminy Glick shows up, too! And Martin goes pickin’ on the banjo, showing he’s much more than The Jerk or Father of the Bride. Their friendship is very much a vital part of the show, and it certainly contributes to their comedy styles complementing each other so well. You’ll get a kick out of it all if you’re fans; but, even if you aren’t, it’s worth checking out two entertainers who never run out of steam.

ALEX STRANGELOVE

Alex Truelove is about to graduate high school and lose his virginity to his girlfriend. Yet, he’s found an unexpected connection with a guy that makes him question everything. What we’re left with is an awkwardly crafted teen dramedy that hits a few high notes on the anxiety of high school, but not as honest with itself in its storytelling. Its fake sincerity about coming out turns the emotion off quickly.

SET IT UP

A quickly forgotten Netflix rom-com that’s so predictable, it’s excruciating to watch. Dumb and unfunny, there’s not one particular thing to change to make this more enjoyable. All of it is a complete waste of your time.
