Really Happy This Daredevil Raccoon’s Adventure Got a Storybook Ending

So, yesterday #MPRRaccoon started trending like crazy. As it turns out, it’s about this daredevil raccoon scaling a building in Minnesota out of fear and/or rummaging for food.

Courtesy of BBC:

A daredevil raccoon has been safely rescued after leaving the internet on tenterhooks by scaling a 23-floor building in St Paul, Minnesota.

The critter, dubbed #MPRraccoon after the radio station opposite the high-rise, trended worldwide on Twitter.

Crowds gathered at the building after it went viral, and local media streamed its perilous climb for almost a day.

Twitter celebrated as it reached the roof at 03:00am (07:00 BST) where cat food was waiting inside a trap.

Personally, I like Daredevil Raccoon as a nickname a lot better than #MPRraccoon. But, we have to give props to this raccoon. That’s clutch….just absolutely clutch.

You know what would happen to me if I tried to climb a 23-story building? I wouldn’t make it 10 feet AND THEN I WOULD DIE. Just astonishing – I’m incredibly impressed with the resiliency of this raccoon.

“We went out there at about 8:30 on Tuesday morning and saw it was a raccoon. Two workers in the building got out a couple of long planks – sort of making a kind of ladder for it.”

But that initial rescue failed – and ended up scaring the animal upwards.

It spent much of Tuesday going up and down the building’s floors, occasionally napping on ledges.

Before its final ascent to the roof, it had been slowly making its way down, as an anxious audience watched on into the night.

Maybe it didn’t want to be captured? Maybe this was its plan all along? Tired of a life of relative anonymity, this raccoon spent its life dreaming of the big stage. And, if no one on Broadway was going to give him a chance, he was going to take it himself.

It’s thrilling, but really, a lot could of gone wrong for this raccoon. Namely, it could have fallen off of a building.

But, the raccoon was caught and released safely into the wild. I hope he’s sitting back, enjoying some nice tasty trash and reflecting upon the last 24 hours. It really reads like an inspirational Pixar film, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it turned into a movie. I hope when it inevitably wins an Oscar, they can find this raccoon to share it all with.

Raccoons are common in the US, but are usually found in alleys or riffling through rubbish bins – leading to the common animal nickname “trash panda”.

No need for such racist terminology, BBC. I expected better of you.
