UFC 225: Bobby Knuckles Approved

We’re just a couple of days removed from UFC 225, which turned out to be one of the better, if not best, cards of the year. CM Punk losing is getting a lot of traction, but I’m here to tell you that a hell of a lot more happened than Punk falling to 0-2.

Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero

This turned into an absolute classic with the third round being one of the craziest rounds of combat I’ve seen. I mean seriously – this was almost as crazy as that fifth round between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit. Both men landed gigantic power shots, but neither would stay down. If you want to see toughness, watch what Robert Whittaker went through in the last three rounds. Romero kept landing haymakers, but Bobby Knuckles was not gonna get finished. Tougher than tough, man. This was a super close decision. Admittedly, I thought Yoel was going to sneak out the win thanks to his work in the fourth round, with Whittaker retaining and now holding two wins over Yoel.

Holly Holm vs. Megan Anderson

Holly F’n Holm. That’s all I want to say about this one. Megan’s size and spunk had people saying this was going to be her coming out party in the UFC and a win over Holm would have been huge. Holm had other plans as she completely and utterly dominated Anderson. Holm’s highlight package will always lead off with that Ronda knockout, but this performance was super impressive.

Colby Covington vs. Rafael dos Anjos

Pretty good showing for Covington, but I wasn’t as impressed as others and I’ll tell you why. RDA is a great fighter and is totally game, but I want to see Covington against another true welterweight. The size difference showed, especially with Covington’s grappling work against the cage. Solid win for sure, although he was more impressive against Demian Maia this win puts an interim belt around his waist so he’ll gladly take it. Now, if Covington does what he’s done in his last two fights against Tyron Woodley, I’ll change my tune.

Curtis Blaydes vs. Alistair Overeem

I’m gonna have nightmares of Curtis Blaydes gashing Reem open with those elbows for weeks. That’s four wins in a row for Blaydes with the last two coming from a decision over Mark Hunt followed by this POTN finish of Alistair. Really interested to see who he’ll be matched up with next.

I also wanna shout out Rashad Evans. He was knocked out by a vicious Anthony Smith knee and rumors are swirling that it may be retirement time for him. At times, I’ve not been a Rashad guy, but there’s no denying he’s been an important part of the UFC’s history. He won TUF 2, knocked out Chuck Liddell, won the Light Heavyweight Title by finishing Forrest Griffin and went five rounds with Jon Jones. Whether this was his last fight or not, he’s a sure fire Hall of Famer.
