Nashville Reviews: Homegrown Taproom and Marketplace (Donelson)
Several months ago, “Nature Boy” Brandon Vick came to us and said he found a spot in Donelson that seemed like a perfect spot for the SoBros Network crew to hang out and review. A real “SoBros brand” type of establishment. So, we added it to our vision board for Q2 and finally got around to checking this place out yesterday.
Homegrown’s reputation begins and ends with its extensive tap of local brews. It’s a beer spot, first and foremost, and I was happy to see it live up to that hype. Part of me wanted to try a few different brews while I was there, but I’m a big Smith & Lentz fan. I could never turn away from the pineapple nodes of the Pressure Drop IPA. Homegrown has it on draft and it’s a delightfully refreshing choice in the Summer months.
For dinner, I went with the Philly cheesesteak mac n’ cheese. It was a toss-up between that, the buffalo mac n’ cheese, and the BBQ mac n’ cheese. Wanted something different, and hearty, and their specialty mac seemed like the logical choice.
It wasn’t bad! It didn’t have quite the savory flavor that pops like I prefer, but it was solid. Creamy, cheesy, and loaded with peppers, onions, and mushrooms to go with the meat. The scallions on top provided a nice crunch to give this dish a nearly perfect texture.
The atmosphere is excellent – saw some live music, and sat and enjoyed good conversation with friends for several hours. Plus, the service was excellent.
I expect the Donelson area to undergo a huge makeover in the coming years, and Homegrown is one of the spots at the forefront of that. It has all the feel of a friendly neighborhood bar. To their credit, it’s not advertised to be a high-end dinner spot, so you’re probably not going to earn many points taking your date here for a meal.
But, if you’ve been disappointed by the lack of neighborhood bars in the area, this is your new home, pal. Homegrown seems like the perfect spot to stop by for a brew or two after a long, hard day.
All in all, it gets a 6.75 of 10 from the SoBros team. It’s above average in comfort, atmosphere, and the beer list is stellar.
The rest of the SoBros’ take
The food won’t impress you, but the beer will keep you coming back. I had the meatball sub, and while it was good, it’s quite plain. There’s nothing on it to make it have a kick. But the beers I sipped on, all three being Walk The Lime, were delightful. Next time I’ll have to try something different though. Go for the alcohol selection, and eat if you must in this cool little hideaway.

And, of course, we threw together a quick video review as we’ve been known to do before:
