B.B. King’s Deserves Some More Credit in the New Nashville Scene

Maybe because it’s been around in Nashville for so long, it’s no longer new and exciting like the myriad of rooftop bars lining Broadway. But, B.B. King’s Blues Club down on 2nd Avenue in Nashville deserves a little more credit in 2018. Call me an old head, but it’s a tremendous option for a nice Friday or Saturday evening; a gem in a saturated market of honky tonks and juke joints. It’s different – and usually, that’s reserved for the hip new trendy parts of town. But, B.B. King’s has always delivered as somewhat of a dark horse in the downtown game. Maybe it gets slapped with the “touristy” tab from locals the same way the Wildhorse Saloon does. But, I say give it another shot some time.

When you hear “B.B. King’s,” I’m sure the first thought is always the music. I’ve been to B.B. King’s on several occasions, and yes – the music is always great. I’m not really a fan of country music to begin with. So, any time I can get a change of pace, I’m all for it. I’m not willing to take the crown of Nashville’s greatest blues club off of Bourbon Street over in Printer’s Alley – that place is a damn good time eight days a week. But, I am willing to say that B.B. King’s provides a nice alternative, right downtown in the thick of the action.

But, it’s the menu that really makes this joint underrated. The Music City has a nationally elite BBQ scene – I’d put it up there with Memphis and Kansas City any day of the week. It’s one of the things we’re known for, and you could probably put a blindfold on downtown and stumble into a good pulled pork sandwich. But, while we’re always praising places like Jack’s, Martin’s, and Edley’s, B.B. King’s has a surprisingly strong BBQ fastball. The ribs are to die for, making it hard to order anything else. But, the whole menu is enticing.

Plus, the place is centrally located. That makes it the prime starting point for your night out on the town. Go out, get a great dinner, see some awesome live music that’s going to be different from anything else you see on Broadway, and when you’re done, BOOM – you’re right there on 2nd Avenue with every Broadway bar within walking distance.

It’s a great, different kind of Nashville night, but I don’t see enough people really banging the drum for it. Just wanted to make a little noise for B.B. King’s real quick.
