Ghost Could Be the Most Intriguing Villain of the MCU Yet

Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters July 6th. I’ve written about why I think this movie is going to be critical to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and I don’t think it’s a reach to see why. The timing of its release in relation to the current Marvel timeline, along with the subject matter it’s set to explore is interesting to say the least. But, one of the things I find myself most intrigued by is the villain. Ghost appears to be the main antagonist to Ant-Man and the Wasp, and she could be the MCU’s most complex foil yet.

In the comics, Ghost is a dude, but with the casting of Hannah John-Kamen, that’s obviously different in the film. But, gender aside, Ghost is already a bit different from most villains to begin with. He’s motivated by taking on greedy corporations and has been a particular nuisance to Tony Stark. That’s right…he’s traditionally an Iron Man villain. He isn’t an overly powerful guy, so it’s refreshing to see after the monstrous destruction Thanos brought about in Avengers: Infinity War.

Ghost’s suit allows him to become invisible and phase through objects. We know now that that is going to apply in the movie as well. But, from the latest trailer released, it looks like the suit and her abilities are connected to a mastery of the Quantum Realm. Quick refresher: the Quantum Realm is the subatomic dimension where time and space hold no relevance. It’s where Ant-Man shrunk to in 2015’s Ant-Man, and it’s where Hank Pym lost his wife, and the original Wasp, Janet van Dyne.

But, that’s where things really get interesting, because the potential implications of that are huge.

Basically, it means that there’s a pathway to our heroes figuring the Quantum Realm out and perhaps using it to safely traverse time and space in the war against Thanos. Ghost, seemingly a one-film throwaway villain at first, could be that gateway. It also could make her a valuable ally to the Avengers, and I could definitely see her character arc leading her to ultimately join Ant-Man, Wasp, Dr. Pym, and Goliath (!!!) in aiding the Avengers.

Plus, the costume just looks freakin’ cool. Call me a sucker for comic book villains, but I’m excited about this one.
