Draft Rewind: The 2010 WWE Draft

It’s Draft Day folks! While Stoney and Poppa Bear prepare for tonight’s festivities, I’m looking back at the 2010 WWE Draft. Eight years ago today, Raw kicked off one of the wackiest Drafts in WWE history. The setup would be as follows: A Raw superstar would square off with a Smackdown superstar with the winner earning a selection for his/her respective brand. The curveball comes with the winning brand’s selection coming at random. Basically post match a ‘character select’ screen pops up and someone hits the random button.

First of all, I would love for the NFL to take the first part of the WWE’s system into consideration as a possibility moving forward in future drafts. Let the coaches fight it out with the toughest hombre coming out with the best picks. It’s already public knowledge that Vrabel would beat the hell out of every other head coach so as a Titans fan, this just seems like the best plan. Matter of fact, we’ll even keep the random selection stuff. Coach V would just punk out everyone and get who he wanted anyway.

The first selection goes to Smackdown thanks to a LayCool victory which means the first pick will be one of the Divas. Boom – it’s Kelly Kelly, y’all. Looking back on it, even at random, this selection is a little bit of a reach.

CM Punk defeats Evan Bourne (shout out Matt Sydal) to give Smackdown the second pick of the 2010 WWE Draft as well and The Big Show goes off the board. Solid selection that would pay dividends down the road.

Raw finally gets a win and THREE selections after Ted Dibiase, Jr. and Santino Marella won a 10-team duel battle royal match. Raw ends up with Edge, R-Truth and John Morrison from the victory and I’ve gotta say the red brand has really won in the whole random selection thing so far tonight.

Chris Jericho gets Smackdown back on the board after beating Christian and with the selection, Kofi Kingston is added to the Smackdown acquisitions. Who would have guessed that out of everyone mentioned so far, Kofi would be such a steal?

Jack Swagger and John Morrison go one on one next with Swagger coming out victorious. This means Smackdown gets their fourth random selection of the night with Christian being picked. I really, really miss Captain Charisma, peeps.

The final selection of the night goes to Raw after Hornswoggle beats Dolph Ziggler via count out. It kind of hurt to type that. Raw obtains Chris Jericho and that is that for the 2010 WWE Draft. Even at random it’s pretty crazy to think of Jericho as the ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ of the 2010 Draft.

Big Show, Kofi and Christian were all solid gets for Smackdown but you have to give Raw the Draft win here. Raw gets John Morrison along with two future Hall of Famers in Edge and Jericho. Well played, random Raw selections…well played.

Final Draft Grades

Raw: A+

Smackdown: B+
