Nashville: The Watertown Mile Long Yard Sale Is This Saturday

It’s a tradition unlike any other, folks: the Watertown Mile Long Yard Sale. It’s usually the official unofficial harbinger of Spring here in Middle Tennessee. But, this year feels a little different. I don’t know if, oh maybe it’s because it was literally freezing and snowing yesterday morning or what. But, the usual warmth and fragrances that come along with Spring in Nashville haven’t quite set in. Nonetheless, it’s time to don our backpacks, pull some cash out of the ATM, and hunt for the deal of a lifetime.

You can check out the city’s page for information on what to expect in 2018. But, last year was quite the journey. It was our first year covering the yard sale as a brand, and we ended up with mixed results. I usually land a few good comic books, but my usual guy wasn’t there. It was rainy outside, with no end in sight, and because of that, a lot of people stayed home.

Seriously – I feel like I’ve been going to this yard sale every year for the last 20 years of my life, and I’ve never seen it so desolate. More people read about the yard sale and watched our live coverage than we actually saw at the yard sale. And that was last year…so that’s saying something about Mother Nature’s ability to keep people away from this event.

But, we enjoyed ourselves regardless. I found an old Titans bobblehead and mini-helmet. Poppa Bear came away with some classic vinyls. We all found Watertown hats that I, personally, can’t wait to throw on the ol’ dome and wear with pride. Unfortunately, a lot of the food vendors were closed down last year. But, on the bright side, we got to try a new spot, whose name I can’t recall and can’t find online because I’m a terrible journalist. Anyway – great burgers.

This year marks the 29th year of them running this mile long yard sale, but Saturday is supposed to be mostly sunny and 72 degrees. Hot damn – that sounds like yard sale weather to me. Also, it blows my mind that this whole thin is almost as old as I am! The city’s website claims that there’s usually around 10k-20k attendees, and that wouldn’t surprise me in the least bit. It’s become a real staple of a lot of Tennessean’s calendars.

But, if you’re planning on coming out this year, just be sure to leave the silly string at home and don’t sell a knife to a child:

The following items are NOT acceptable for this family event:
Snap Pops • Silly String • Realistic-Looking Cap Pistols • Rubber Bullet Shooting Pistols • T-Shirts with Suggestive Themes (such as women, drugs etc.) • Knives (no sales to minors without parental permission)

Folks, that’s Tennessee right there.

The SoBros team will have a presence in Watertown this weekend. I know for a fact that Cadbury, “Nature Boy” Brandon Vick, and John Mosley will be in attendance. I’m planning on running a competition this year – everyone gets $5 and whoever finds the coolest item with that money wins.
