Tennessee Titans Draft Needs (Updated Post-Free Agency)

The initial frenzy of free agency has passed, and the Tennessee Titans made quite the splash. We’re not really used to seeing ’em go after hot ticket free agents. But, that’s just what they did. They signed cornerback Malcolm Butler and running back Dion Lewis away from the New England Patriots. And, they kept Josh Kline, Quinton Spain (for now), and DaQuan Jones in-house. But, overall, the Titans draft needs didn’t change too much.

They bought themselves some time along the interior of the offensive line. A lot of experts think Kline is going to be a much better fit under the new regime. Plus, Spain still has a wealth of talent and potential. I’ve been beating this drum for months now, but I agree that it’s not fair to place all of the blame squarely on these two in a year when the entire offensive line struggled.

Signing Lewis doesn’t completely eliminate a need at running back. I still say they draft a guy late who has a similar skill set. But, it does save them from needing an early-round investment at the position.

For the time being, all signs point towards this being a defense-heavy draft. But, we said that a year ago, and the Titans selected Corey Davis, Taywan Taylor, and Jonnu Smith in the first few rounds. So, hey – who knows?

Updated Titans Draft Needs Post-Free Agency

1. Pass Rusher – It is now the preeminent need for this team. Getting Derrick Morgan and Brian Orakpo some help is paramount to improving the defense. Kevin Dodd has been a bust to this point. The Titans need a consistently elite guy who can make opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable.

2. Inside Linebacker – Avery Williamson leaving for the New York Jets creates a need for a sure-tackling inside linebacker. To borrow a phrase from 104.5 The Zone’s Mickey Ryan, this team needs a “junkyard dog” at the position.

3. Defensive Line – Suh Watch is well underway, but until he signs somewhere, and with fan favorite Karl Klug and Sylvester Williams getting released, the Titans suddenly need a guy along the defensive line.

4. Interior O-Line – The Titans still need center/guard depth. It’s just not necessarily a first round need anymore. I like the Kline deal.

5. Quarterback – I don’t think the draft is the answer here. But, the Titans have to have somebody, right?!?! If they lose out on any of these free agent backups, they may have no choice but to draft a guy.

I am not in the camp that sees wide receiver as a need for this team. You can’t have too many offensive weapons for Marcus Mariota. But, I think they have a lot of potential in the four guys they have. Butler makes this secondary a potentially lethal unit. They could use another safety, but I’m happy with Curtis Riley being the third guy behind Kevin Byard and Jonathan Cyprien.
